but pretty much, a 6mge is a 5mge with a longer stroke crankshaft, and corresponding rods to give it 9.2:1 compression. the 6mge is a 3.0liter displacement version of the 2.8liter 5mge.

later 5mge's had domed piston's, early ones had flat/slightly concave tops. I put domed pistons on my early 5mge to get 9.2:1 compression so if a 6mge has flat top pistons stock(?) at 9.2:1 then adding domed would give u 9.6:1. The heads are all the same for 5m's and 6m's.

I would be curious to do the actual math on that... because I don't think it would work out to a standard .4 increase going from the 8.8 pistons to the 9.2 pistons in a 6M.... but for all intensive purposes I guess thats good enough a figure to use... Just me being curious :)

I went through the exercise myself of calculating the change in compression ratio; the 9.2 (domed) pistons on the 6M crank would give 9.8:1 or thereabouts.

Just picked up a 6mge today.

6M's EGR is blocked off -- the stock EGR cooler bolts right on though

My 6M has a different oil pan, and oil-pump pickup. Althought the oil pump pick-up screen assembly is held in place by the same-looking flange and 5 small 10mm bolts -- and the 5M pickup won't clear the 6M pump's shaft. The 6M pump also has a larger tube too (by 1mm). The oil pan has the sump moved farther rear-ward so it doesn't appear to clear the supra's crossmember. I'm currently trying to track down a good 5m pan (threw a rod through mine), but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Oh, and the 6M has a different intake manifold (absent on my 6m though)

Hi all,

I am using a 7m block same (as 6m) I have a 6m pully and gear to fit the 7m crank, but what I do need is the pistons. I want to use over sized 5m
domed (pretty sure they will fit ) does anyone know where to get them other than toyota?

Thank for any tips!

any machine shop can get them. the one i go to charges $40 per piston with rings. if your going to stay n/a might want to order for an 85 supra, if a turbo is in the future plans, order for an 82 supra.

also, the reason the 6m has a center sump pan is cause it didnt come out of a supra. prolly came from a cressida or a vehicle we didnt even get in the states.

Given the rods of the two motors are the same length, and the 6MGE stroke is longer, wouldnt 5MGE 9.2 to 1 later models pistons pop up thru the top of the block at top dead center?

The 6M rods are shorter than the 5M rods. The pistons in both engines come to the same height. The 5M domed pistons run fine in a 6M. I've run this combo a couple of years now.

Ahhhhhhh  I see, Thanks for the knowledge. Ross pistons wasnt sure and neither was I. I priced out some 10.2 to one pistons woth them and mentioned that combo, as I said they werent sure. Sweet, now I know!
