I can get a 7m pacesetter header for a very good deal, but would like to know if the piping will fit in the engine bay. Making a custom header-back exhaust isn't a problem, but if the header rubs against the fender or if it won't even bolt to the head -- then it won't do me any good.

7M headers work fine on 5/6M's. The only thing you'll need to do is grind a bit off of the flange to clear the power steering pump...same as ya would for a 7M turbo manifold.

it will also hang a little low and prolly scrape every speed bump you drive over. you can get any muffler shop to modify the collector so it will be higher.
