Im planning a '88 7mgte swap into my 82.
Ive spent the last 4 hours going over swap "how-to's" online.
I can do everything that I have read so far. ie: physically making the 7MGTE fit and live happily under the hood of my 82.

HOWEVER...
all the wiring how-to's that I have run across are very sketchy and confusing at the same time. I do not plan on changing fuel pumps becasue the 7MGTE will be kept stock for a while, now from what ive learned thus far this means i dont need to deal with the fuel pump/resistor subharness. I do require some assistance on the alternator/EFI subharness and the 7M engine wire to the cowl wire behind the glovebox subharness.

If anyone has any clue as to what Im talking about then please help.

oh yea I practically 'stole' the running turbo donor car for $700 hehehe

I also am considering this swap myself. Once I've found an MKII. May have one, but still working on importation details.

I did a total body rewired an 84 Supra 5 spd due to a ground issue that was causing the running lights to come on when you stepped on the brake, and left no brake lights if the running lights were on. I was unable to find a donor car that was the same year and a 5 spd, so I ended up going with the same year car in an Auto. This posed a few problems, but nothing that the Toyota wiring diagrams didn't show.

Basically what I'm thinking of doing when I get ready to perform this swap myself is, to get the wiring diagrams from Toyota. Small books that outline each of the different systems and subsystems in the car. If you get one for both years that are being changed and carefully trace out everything and make the changes needed to match up ECU and other systems that need to be wired in, you should have little trouble.

This is all I can recommend at this time as I have not even began this project and don't absolutely have either car to make the harness myself.

Take your time and you should do fine.

I know that if i actually spent the time (good part of a weekend) i can get the wiring done. I was just hoping to get some help/guidance and cut the install time.

im gonna be starting this project real soon. Like as soon as i get the clutch, oil filter relocation kit, and a hoist.

cool. thx for looking for those notes.
Im keeping the stock fuel pump for now only becasue its 1. easier and 2. An external pump on the 82 and is internal for the 88. 3. the 7MGTE is gonna be stock for a while. once its upgraded then the fuel pump will be too.

I'm actually doing this exact swap ( 82-88 ) but haven't started the wiring yet. You definetly should have both years wiring diagrams and TSRM's if you can get them. The only problem with this is the '82 wiring diagram book is no longer available from Toyota. I have a copy on CD-ROM so if you need it email me. '82 is different than all other years too, so don't try and use other year mk2 wiring diagrams. As for the engine harness, that should be a straight swap in place of the 5M engine harness. The connector should go through the same firewall hole and into the 7M computer. I took every wiring harness out of the mk3 because I wasn't sure exactly what I needed and plus I have spare wiring for lengthening and splicing. We should keep in touch via email as I'm sure we can help each other out along the way.

did you know it's bad to bring threads back from the dead?
Why is that? Better to start a new thread and add more load and crap to the site instead of asking in an already started, relevant thread? i think not. stop talking out of your ass.
:crossjerk
i was searching... looking for people to talk to with 82's and a 7mgte
Don't worry about that james, no worries.

People are supposed to search and bring up old posts, dumb ass.
My exact point Darrow.

Good grief....

Good points & bad points.....

Yes, it's "NORMALLY" better to add onto a existing thread, rather than start a new one.

However: "Depending on how old the thread is & when a new question is asked, it has to be within a reasonable TIMEFRAME".

In this case: BAD POINTS: LAST TIME THIS FORUM MEMBER LOGGED IN:

FOUR YEARS AGO, YOU GUYS!!!!!!!! DO YOU REALLY THINK THE ORIGINAL POSTER IS GOING TO REPLY TO YOUR PM???

Please use common sense & think before posting....

I'm finishing up a swap myself, I just need to find the diagrams to make sure I have all of the wiring right. Is there anything else I should change going from an '85 5m-ge to an 89 Japaneese (non-egr) 7m-ge? I hear alot about fuel pumps and oil relocation stuff, so what's up with that?

7MGTE concerns not so much or at all for the 7MGE
