Hello everyone! My name is Josh (20) and I recently found this beautiful 84 Celica Supra on Facebook marketplace and got rid of my rx7 immediately for it (the lady said I could only have one 'project' at a time).

She runs and drives decently, already did a radiator and fan upgrade (went to electric cuz the clutch fan blew up and hit the radiator), and am in the middle of completing a brake job. There are only a few things I'm confused about. I think I have an 84 P-type because I have a manual trans, cloth interior, and the rims. But I am still perplexed as to why I don't have the wrap around turn signals. Everything I have found so far states that 84 was the first year of the wrap arounds and have done a little bit of vin number decoding myself (says that model year is 84). Is anyone able to clarify this for me? do i own a late 83/early 84 model?

As you can tell I am kind of lost with how much information there is not only on this site but many others as well, so I thought id make a post introducing myself and asking at the same time. Thank you!

Someone probably wrecked the car at some point since the bumper and fenders are wrong for an 84 P type. Look at the door tag. Anything Aug 83-July 84 is an 84 model year.

That would make sense, All the wiring for the pop ups are cut so they are manual knobs for right now, along with a non stock hood and busted ac fan. My door tag says April of 84, didn't think to check there! lol

So the bumpers are interchangeable? that's really neat I may have to pick one up from somewhere if i can find one. This front bumper I have now is cut on the bottom so its missing the fog lights.

EDIT this would also explain why the paints dont match lol. Had NEVER thought of why, thank you for this insight.

If you have all the parts yeah since it just bolts on. You'll want to get the correct fenders as well since that corner marker light isn't there on the later cars. The later L types have an add on piece at the bottom to match the new bumper or the flares are different on the P types.

You haven't revealed your location, but looking at the saguaro cactus in the background leads me to believe that you are in southern Arizona. I have a slightly damaged right front fender, valance, and bumper cover for an '84, but being in the desert you should be able to find good parts in the scrap yards. My car is also an April '84 build. This is what the front end should look like. In my humble opinion, they look better w/o the sunshade/spoiler. I wouldn't look to hard to find a replacement!

Great find, good luck!

Check out the links on the right side of my blog here to help identify car years, what parts came on what, data plate decoding etc

And yes it's very possibly it was in an accident and parts were changed. Having more pictures and info would be helpful, such as interior, tail lights etc.

Your car is an L type btw.

Keep in mind doors can be changed too, make sure the VIN in the door matches the VIN on dashboard and on the firewall

Tanya, if you look close at the rear wheel opening in his only photo, I think the car does indeed have wheel arch flares, and is a P type that someone butchered up and put on a front clip from an earlier L type. You can also see that the side trim does not quite line up and the paint is different. As you say, more photos would help us a lot. BTW, I'm old school and hope that it is restored as original rather than being made into a drift car.....

Thank you all so much for all of the input! To reply to rhartmaier, I am in southern Arizona. Are there a lot of these supras that the junk yard? i think the 84 bumpers do look better than what i have on now and would hope to someday make the front end look like an 84 again. What other pictures would be helpful? i can include some of the rear fender and brake lights?

It's up to you to find the Supras in the junk yards my friend! I wish you well. Check the For Sale threads often, you never know what will pop up. I appreciate it that you are rescuing this car. I feel you pain as at present I am trying to resurrect a '68 MGB that has had many sins committed against it in the last 50 years.

My car is also an April '84 build. Identical to yours except that I have a leather interior so the sun shade is deleted.

Good Luck,

Bob

Well that guy on TV wanders around a junk yard north of Phoenix and finds all kinds of cars. They are usually '60's and '70's muscle cars though. Anyway, Paddy probably does need interior parts, but what he is looking for now is a front clip from an 84-85.
