attached photos are from Zen Graphics and thought Raptor Racing had them also before though maybe I am overlooking them now

may be a while until I paint my car and working on quite a bit of mechanical issues including but not limited to my hood cable coming loose under the hood yet again

will be looking for placement of lettering along with what color the black P-Type used

also, trying to decide if I want to go with the large lettering or the more subtle - curious also the history behind the two different ones

thank you

The 82-83 had the ‘subtle’ style and the 84-86 had the billboard. The billboard in your photo above is positioned too high

Mine is an 83 which should have what you put on. As I recall (same as Spud said,) they had the smaller "Celica Supra" lettering on the right through 83 and then went to the big billboard in 84. But I put the big, billboard on mine anyway because that's what I remember seeing on these as a kid and I thought it was cool. Yours being an 85 would have had the big, billboard but what you have done looks great and I am a big zen graphics fan. Their choices and quality are top notch. It was the only place I found that could do two tone with a main color and a border if you want it. Love mine. Looks good but choices choices. If you go billboard there is the one person on eBay that does the translucent design and one on etsy that does the non-translucent but a bit more correct. I went with the ebay gold translucent as it looks cool in the dark and still matches my gold well enough in the day. If you do the billboard my tip is to measure top to bottom and the sides and mark them off with blue tape so you can line it up will. You may have to trim around the keyhole on the hatch and should if you have it lined up correctly per stock (again in agreement with Spud)...they were positioned a bit lower and trimmed a bit around the "P" on the keyhole.

Mine is probably even slightly high per stock but I liked this positioning. If it doesn't go over the keyhole a little it doesn't quite look right. My tail lights are a dead giveaway that it's an 83 and should have the other graphics but I don't care, I wanted the billboard and only someone on here would ever know. Both of those sources...the eBay and the etsy people do them in multiple colors so pick your favorite. I actually ordered both. Again the eBay is translucent (reflective at night) but the etsy is slightly more original looking and that seller gave me two as well so you get a backup in case you mess up!

I like the contrast on yours. Makes me consider possibly red on my black. Do you know what the OEM was on the black? I would have thought silver or white. Thank you again.

Hmmm? I'm not sure what the OEM billboard lettering color would have been on black in those years. Maybe someone here knows? I'm guessing white or gray / silver. I will say I have seen red on black but depending on the color of red it can get a bit buried in the black...not a ton of contrast with if you get the wrong red. on the other hand, the red would match the Celica Supra logos well.

LifeForLife's black 85 has red pinstripe that looks great, so maybe that color red in the lettering and then red pinstripe or hockey stripe graphics of the same red would be sharp. A sharp, bright red is what is needed, not a darker red that blends with the black too much in my opinion. See LifeForLife's current build thread. He went with a white billboard though. Maybe you could get one of the ebay or etsy sellers to do it red with a white border then the red / white pinstripe like LifeForLife's. That would be sharp.

Gray may make more sense than silver.

Will see if anyone else replies regarding color lettering on black body color.

I did see someone with a nice red pinstripe or maybe it was a hockey stripe on black that I liked.

Much appreciated.

Do a thread search on Billboard, you will see many exemples of color and position.
iirc, on black cars they were gray.

Correct, dark vehicles were grey, light colored vehicles were black, silver vehicles were also grey. Only two colors that came from the factory for the billboard decals.

I've never produced the smaller sets for the early models, but have done a bunch of other versions, including the Celica XX decals and the black banner style (still unconfirmed if any of these were oem).

For installation, its much easier to just pull the lock out of the hatch and install over the hole exactly where it should be, rather than trying to cut around the lock. You can then just slide the lock back in and have the decal tucked under the rubber/plastic gasket of the lock. Takes an extra 5 minutes to pull lock and reinstall it and looks much more professional.

6MGTE variant, definitely not oem:

And no, I don't have any contact with the owner of the red car, that was a photo from waaaaay back when. Don't even know the owner's name any more.
