need help ae-82 1983 corolla

Hey guys, a friend gave me a ae82 corolla with the 4a-lc it is a carburated 1.6.
Anyway, the car didnt run when i got it, and now it runs perfect except I have a problem with it
the car pulls pretty hard for a inline 4 but when checking the oil I smell gas in with the oil and it looks a little thined out.
Should I lean it out at the carb from the mixture screw. The motor has been rebuilt so im pretty sure its not leaking down past the rings.
What do yall think should I lean it out from the carb

I need a car thats better on gas help me out lol

83 Corolla was an AE71, AE82 came in 84 and was FWD.

Check the O-ring on the fuel cut solenoid....they deteriorate, fall off, and cause mad rich mixture.

I think the manual fuel pumps would leak into the motors when they went bad. That's usually what I found when the car would run and idle right. There also was a diapharm on the carb that i think was called an AAP valve that would go bad and cause it to run very rich, but that would also cause it to miss and run rough.
