Wow! Very nice R&D Wes! This is the kind of thing we need to get us fired up about a particular chassis. It's often times not feasible to come up with something completely new for a very niche market chassis, but many of our parts are semi-modular, so we can put something together that will work or make the few parts that would make it work.

Wes,

Very nice writup, and we really appreciate the hard work!

Don, do you have any opinion on the idea I put forth to make these DSP legal? You have experience with regional and national tech inspection/protest that I don't.

Thanks again Gabe for the killer parts, those things are really impressive in how well they are built.

I don't think that these would pass in DSP, even if you put bushings on the front mount because the pivot point has been changed. The fact that they're bright red would stand out during impound, when everyone is looking at your car. Its possible it can be overlooked if you painted them black.

Wes, any feedback on ride harshness on the street, yet. I'm curious to see how they feel on rough roads.

Gabe, How long are the spherical bearings typically good for. I see these units are much beefier than the others offered for AE86s. I was hoping for at least 2 years out of a set before replacement.

Wes,

I've been re-reading the SCCA rule book, trying to find some way to interpret these strut rod replacements as legal for DSP. Can't see it.

First, it's a replacement strut rod. Not legal.

Pretty much kills the rest of the arguments.

Only change allowed is current bushings with a non-metallic bushing of whatever material you choose. The strut rod needs to stay factory.

Maybe a different shape urethane bushing to replace the big rubber stock units could allow better suspension pivoting, yet accurately limit caster changes.

I still think this is a wonderful part, and a big thanks to Gabe and his company for making a great product.

Don L.

ps: darn good SM mod

It seems to handle rough roads better than before, like I said it really feels like the struts are working to dampen things now. Maybe its all in my head but thats how it feels to me.

Ok, I didn't know there was a no strut rod replacement rule. I am moving towards SM with the car but its not quite there just yet.

Hey, I might run SM anyway, with DSP prep. I like the competition and it would be fun with other supras in the class. Not sure what we will have locally in DSP next year. Anyone have a good source for a "big" wing installed on the rear hatch? Maybe if I go fast enough, it could be a small benefit.

What a great find and a great write up Wes!!! Thanks for trying this mod out for the rest of us. This goes next to my suspension mods list.
Since you brought this up with the "semi" interchangeable AE86 parts I did a small search in the forum to see for other AE86 parts that may work on the mkII chassis but it didn't yield any findings to be honest. I was wondering if any of those would work on our cars:

- AE86 Outer Tie Rod End http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/photo_06.html, http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/photo_07.html

- AE86 Front Lower Arm http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/photo_10.html, http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/photo_09.html

- AE86 Over Angle (inner) Tie Rod http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/photo_11.html

and here's a link to the main page with products full features among other parts http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0510it_ultimate_suspension_products/.

Yannis Ive talked about being able to use these for a while now. but maybe coming from you everyone else will say that its a good idea.
Yeap I remember that Alex. Kudos are due to Wes as well though as he took the dig and bought them without knowing if they'll fit in the first place. I'm glad there's folks like you out there that take notice of compatible parts for our cars and take one step further to experiment on their cost!!!

So are you guys ever going to make real parts for our cars?

Top stuff Wes, this is really awsome. You US guys have alot of great ideas.

Back on the topic of caster for a sec, i remember reading in Yannis suspension thread i think it was, that a caster ranger of between 5 and 7 was okay. Anything above 7 and its not good. And with this caster setting, a camber setting of around 2-3 degrees neg is ideal. Might be worth to have a search and dig it up out of his thread. Explains very well how caster works too.
