Can anyone tell me if there are differences in the crankshafts of the early models vs. the 85?

there isn't any difference, iirc.

Toyota EPC shows the same number for all years. The only difference you should find is the 85+ crank will have the bearing #'s stamped on two of the crank weights for the select fit bearings.
