i have an 85 celica supra m/t i pulled engine and i have a 87 cressida that also has the 5mge every thing under the hood looks the same but it is an automatic so im wondering if i can hook up my w58 transmission to the auto 5mge. im sure i would have to put the m/t flywheel on the auto 5mge
i would really like to know before i start tearing the cressida apart

The crossmembers between the two are very different and you cannot swap tranny crossmembers between the Cressida and Supra since the Cressy one is wider between the mounting holes to the body.

I found a Cressy engine for sale, and I'm thinking of doing the same thing (use the Cressy engine, and my M/T) Just use the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, off the CS engine on the Cressy engine right?
I'm sure this has been covered many times, and didn't bother to search because this thread is active on the subject. :)

yes a 5mge is a 5mge - the Cressy 5mge will mate to your Supra W58 and bolt right into the engine room. Because you're going to a m/t you will need a pilot bushing and all the m/t bellhousing/clutch, etc.

There is no problem about mounting it on the engine, but what are you going to do about the transmission crossmember then?

Chris
He wants to put the Cressy engine in his 5speed Supra not the other way around so no problems except that he needs a pilot bushing. or bearing

Ahh, I see now, I though he was wanting to do a tranny swap. I guess I should stop looking on here at work.:eekfacepalm:

I just did this swap this summer (from and 86 Cressie). It is the same and since you are just changing motors it will bolt up easily. You should also look into pulling the rear diff off the Cressie, as Cressies' diffs are usually in MUCH better shape than Supra diffs. I wish I had, but found this information too late (that they were usually in MUCH better shape due to the automatic, and different mind set of the owners). Good Luck.

PS I just thought of this, the engine harness from the Cressie will be different so you will need to use the one off of the Supra and you may need to change the Throttle body of the 87 to that of your 85 if the TPS is different - not sure from 85 to 87, it may be the same. The 86 to 84 was different so I just switched the entire TB so it would work with my wire harness. Keep this thread current and if you run into any difficulties I may be of some help. You can PM me if you don't want to post in the open, but any problem you will encounter, someone here has already had and may have an easy solution.... that is why we are here...sort of.

I am looking at getting an 88 Cressy engine for my 86 Supra, and it was my understanding that everything would be the same (engine harness, sensors...ect) Am I wrong about this?

I do not know the answer to YOUR question. I was only relaying the experience I had as a precaution, mine was an 86 5M from an automatic cressie into a Manual 84 Supra, so it was slightly different. I know they changed the TPS between 84 and 85. I am sure that the 86 Cressida and 84 Supra wiring harness is different because I took the time to get it out of the 86 whole and it did not fit into the arrangement of the 84, I forget exactly what didn't work but it was not plug and play. It will work, there is no question about that. The question will be what needs to be switched over and what doesn't.

Have whoever told you it would be the same explain it to you, I can only tell you what I have found out through one experience.
