If a 6M has 190 hp to start with, wouldn't it be obscenely easy to break 200hp? Just do intake and exhaust should buy you 15-20 hp on a reasonably new engine, right? What is the timing like on the stock 6M; does it have room to be advanced, or is that already part of the power?

I'm seriously looking at getting a RC 6M, and want to know just how much I can do without getting to overbudget or going turbo.

A 6M does not have 190HP SAE net. A graph that shows the 6M at 190, shows the 5M at about 170-175hp. Japan uses a different HP rating system.

Most people are in the low to mid 160s rwhp range on 6M with intakes headers and exhaust. My theory is that they make about 175-180 hp when install with a factory 5M computer and all the US spec parts. You should be able to get the 190 hp if you installed all the JDM spec parts and such but nobody does that. I would recommend a turbo setup if you are after power. I wasted a ton of money building a 6M and I haven't been able to get out of the 170s rwhp range.

I got 148 rwhp out of the 5M with minor stuff. As was said, to break 200 N/A, you would probably spend more than a 7MGTE conversion. If the 5M runs well, stick a low pressure turbo on it, or go for the swap. I learned that one the hard way. My transplant should be done in 3-4 weeks. 300 rwhp is going to be scary.

I think he meant just 200hp at the engine...which is why his description was "obscenely easy"
The thing is that the 6M-GE doesn't output 190bhp in US Supras. There are theories as to why such as those that Aaron mentioned. Even 200bhp is non-trivial.

I was speaking of HP at the crank when I made my original statement (habit from having a stock 5M; 161 sounds waaay better then 130 or so). Another question, anybody have any idea where to find a JDM 6M ECU?

I am looking at doing a complete rebuild of my 5m. Are there 6M crank, rods and pistons available and if so would my 5m essentially be a 6m? And would this be cost effective?

It would be cheaper to buy a complete 6M. The 6M crank would require you to grind the 5M block for clearance. Than you would need the 6M rods/pistons, front cover, crank pulley etc. If the 3.0 is your dream, it would be better to buy a complete 6M, at least the longblock.
