Need a brake master....

Local shop wants $841 for a MA61 and $470 for a MA70..

So I began looking at other cars that may fit..

Found the 4Runner ones are very similiar...

Can anybody verify which model 4 runner fits?

It seems the 85-88 models are the same as an MA61...

Is the 95 model 4runner brake master the equivalent MA70 brake master? (if so I could upgrade)

thanks for any info

All truck MC's are for rear drum brakes, including 4runners I believe.

That being said, Rockauto.com has our MC listed under the celica/2.8 section for $80 and under. Additionally, I believe if you want an upgrade then both 94 Land Cruiser and Previas have options that fit, for even cheaper.

ADVICS is the original supplier for the brake master and you can find them for less than 100 USD from a variety of sources. Don't let local shop pull your pants down over the price!!

I bought a cardone reman from rockauto a few years ago. Works fine. Looks like they have a closeout sale for $48.79 USD. Not sure of their availability in Sydney, AUS.

I stopped in the auto part shop on way home, he mentioned that if there's a 4runner with four wheel discs it will be fine...

with that said he couldnt tell me which model or year it is..

I don't understand how it wont work if master cylinder is setup for drum brakes. its the same concept in my mind... hydraulic is hydraulic, how does it know if theres drums or discs after that... ?

Ok, I've just found Driftmotion. They seem to have some options in stock....

If i was to upgrade to the MK3 one, does it matter if I get the ABS or non ABS one...

I would assume id need the non ABS since MA61's dont have it. Anybody got any info about that?

The mk3 one isn't drop in, I'd suggest sticking with a stock one unless you have other brake upgrades like BBK etc.

I can't find any differences spec-wise between abs and non, other than non-abs are cast iron versus aluminum. I would assume the abs one can handle weird pressure spikes/drops better. That being said, I have put a 93 4runner ABS MC in an 81 pickup (hilux) without issue. You'll have to do similar and bend brake lines, but that's not a huge deal.

Oh and also, Drum brake MC's require less fluid (smaller reservoir in general) and a Residual Valve to maintain some rear circuit pressure. If you installed it on a car with discs you run the risk of locking up the rears. I think you can run Disc MC's on Drums, with an additional residual valve, but not the other way around (unless it's all external).

I use one for a 1990 4-Runner V6, which I installed 17 years ago, and still works fine.
Good to know, thanks for the info,

Also whilst i'm here I should mention the Driftmotion one came in the post, It fitted although I had to slightly twist my brake line to screw in from the top, where as my original one was on the side.

it seems the Australian spec masters have the outlets coming from the side as opposed to straight up out the top.

IIRC the difference was the bore of the cylinder, the supra being a 7/8" bore and the 4 runner 15/16" bore. Essentially, using the larger bore piston, sweeps a larger volume of brake fluid for the same amount of pedal travel. I would assume that using the larger master cylinder would give you a "touchier" pedal feal...

Using the larger master cylinder might be more advantageous if setting up larger brakes, ala the q45 brake upgrade or similar
