Just sitting here @ work reading abt the Paso Robles earthquake and realized that some of our mk2 Brothers (and Sisters) may live near this disaster. Is everyone OK and accounted for?

Greg,

I was at a stoplight yesterday when the quake hit the central coast...Supra started shakin' its ass and I was thinking "wtf is going on??"

Still reading the news etc...we're feeling aftershocks here. I guess many of the older buildings were damaged, and I read something about an office building where the 2nd floor pancaked down onto the 1st floor. Epicenter is supposedly north of Paso Robles in the San Simeon area (where Hearst Castle is located).

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/West/12/22/ca.earthquake/index.html

In Paso Robles, about 30 miles inland, Jennifer Murick, 19, of Atascadero, and Marilyn Zafuto, 55, of Paso Robles, were killed by falling debris from the collapse of the city's landmark clock tower, police said.

Police and fire officials completed a search of the rubble late Monday with cadaver-sniffing dogs and determined that there were no additional casualties.

The tower was on a corner of a two-story building constructed in 1892. It was across from a municipal park and housed a jewelry store, said Madelyn Stemper, an accountant at a nearby office.
It's really close to the San Andreas fault area (this however is what they're calling the San Simeon fault)...a big earthquake was bound to happen eventually. Scary.

It was just a gentle roller here. People were feeling like they were "losing their balance"...I was in my office at the time, and saw the vertical blinds start to move as I was feeling it. The last time I felt a gentle rolling quake like that was the Santa Cruz/SF quake in '89...we felt that one all the way down here, too.

Too bad about downtown Paso Robles and the two people who died, but had that quake hit in a densely populated area, it'd have been a helluva lot worse.

What's really strange is that the wife and I were both home when it hit and I felt absolutely nothing! I'm only about 2 miles south of you, Bob. And if there were a bit of rolling here, I guarantee ya, I'd know about it! Hell, I run for the door when I feel a 1.5!!! Guess I'm a bit paranoid about it after being in the 5.0 up in Napa Valley Labor Day 2000, the hotel I was in was about a ¼ mile north of the epicenter, and after the shaking was done, the hotel caught of fire!!! Needless to say, it wasn't a very nice vacation...

WHOA!!! I take that back, just felt a rumble as I was typing this(9:54AM PST)!!! I really hate earthquakes! Think I'm in the wrong state???

Gotta go find a door now!!!

For those of you who wanna see what the hell is happening, check this out:

I'm not so sure why people are so afraid of earthquakes in CA. A big shaking in an area every 50+ years is much better than freqent hurricanes, snow storms, tornados, and flooding the rest of the country sees almost every year. Those 3 and 4 pointers aren't even memorable, most you don't even feel. The only good quake I remember was the late 80's Loma Prieta one. Besides wasn't the biggest quake ever in Missouri like 6 eons ago or something.

I dunno Silver, but I can tell ya right now, I'll take a hurricane over an earthquake any day! I've been through 2 hurricanes (Iwa and Iniki) and for me, I guess being able to prepare for a hurricane a few days in advance makes going through them much more bearable.
Quakes however, just doesn't seem to sit well w/me. I just don't like that instant feeling of everything moving and creaking. Call me a wuss, but I just don't like it one bit...
Oh and Bob, I think you meant you'd stay on the right coast, since we're on the left one! :D
