my friends looking at doing some work to his corolla, and i guess his T50 tranny is dying.... i suggested he might be able to use a W58, depending on a few things (output shaft, bell housing size, gearing, ect)

so basically, im just trying to find out if anyone has seen or heard of or done a swap like this?
is it even physically possible?

they're often used when a bigger motor is swapped in, like a 3sgte or 7mgte (yes its been done). I don't think there is a bellhousing to take an A engine to a W tranny. With the swaps I belive the usual driveshaft and tranny mount mods need to be done, but it can physically fit in the space.

I would suggest not to do this set-up....

1) the W series tranny is way heavy than the T50 tranny
2) you got to get a new bellhousing, fabricate a tranny mount, and fabricate a driveshaft.

I would suggest to stick w/ the T50 and it has more better pottential considering the gearing of the T50 is set for the 4AGE engine... I have a bunch of friends who is into AE86's and they had no big problems w/ the T50 and this is autocrossing once a month and one car is running a turbocharged T3 4AGE on 17 psi boost

Yeah, unless you have a bigger engine and/or forced induction, stick with the T50. There are apparently A series -> W5x bellhousings available in some Toyota's, but they're pretty rare and probably only exist in obscure European countries where they put small engines in big cars.

There are bellhousing adapter kits available from various manufacturers (these are popular with GZE swaps) but again I wouldn't bother if you just have a 4A.

thanks for the replies... he isnt sure what he wants to do with the car, i guess hes got a high compression 90-92 4age in there, and he is looking at doing some work to it, although he isnt sure how much.

IIRC the w58 is only 10kg heavier... 22 lbs, a bunch, but nothing TOO excessive.
its also geared lower than the T50, but im not sure if thats better or worse for a low torque motor.

anyways, if we cant get a bellhousing, there isnt much point, i had just thought the w58 would have been a stronger tranny and a good starting point if he were to do some serious mods in the furture.
