Some may be curious about aftermarket ignition system installation.

I installed my Crane today, similar to MSD if you are not familiar with the brand.

I put the main box over the cruise control area with brackets going to the frame. This may not be best as it is near the right edge of the hood where water can enter.

The upgraded coil actually had the same dimensions of the stock coil, so I put it in the stock location, bolted to the igniter.

The tach adapter I put between the coil and fender for now, as the space was perfect for it.

I put the signal to the BOX into the stock coil plug and the BOX had a plug that directly connected to the coil.

It was a pretty smooth install and worked on the first try. Idle appears smoother now, but may just be my imagination. I am doing this in an attempt to get more MPG over long trips, so we'll see what happens.

For power, don't expect much from ignition box upgrades. It's more for peace of mind in my case. I do notice a NICE increase in torque from 2000-3000, right before the AUTO shifts. I did a few WOT runs through the gears, but having the stock header seemed to erase any gains there might have been at the top.

I do recall when I had this same system on my old 85 with headers it really woke up the 3000-5000RPM range.

I have the system setup such that I can plug the stock coil back in if it dies or if I get to hit a dyno for back to back runs.

I think I will try advancing timing next and see if I cant get a little more power out of this thing before 3500RPM.

Could u post up the crane cams part#'s for all the parts you used. I've already got thier LX-91 coil in my car but I've had a hard time finding the right ignition box and if we needed a tach adapter or not.

yes, please post part #, and keep us posted as to how you like it as you drive/check out the way it changes performance.

I haven't seen many people using Crane. I'm going to switch to MSD when I can get somone to buy this setup.

Here is what I'm using currently:

Crane HI-6 Capacitive Ignition PN 60006441
Crane PS92 Race Coil PN 7300892
MSD Tach adapter PN 8910 (the crane tach adapter died)
NGK plug wires etc

I didn't think the MSD tach adapter would work with the crane, but it did.

I think my MPG went up, but I wasn't tracking it before. I put about 8 gallons of gas in yesterday and drove round trip 200 miles so far. I'm not sure but I may be getting 25 miles per gallon (highway), although anything over 20 would make me happy!

So youre using the 8910 instead of the 8910-EIS? I installed a Mallory HyFire VI ignition this past weekend and am having trouble getting the trigger to send a signal to the ECU. I used the 8910-EIS because that is what MSD told me to get. Now I have it hooked up like this http://www.afn.org/~wjh/tsc/supra/ignition/ignition2/ignitiondiagram.JPG
and it is not working. The car fires and then dies so the ignition is working but the ECU is not getting a signal. The Mallory tech told me to get a Chrysler ballast resistor, which I just did, $5 its worth a try. How does your wiring compare to mine?

BTW for those looking to upgrade the Mallory box seems to be way better than MSD. The MSD is analog, the Mallory is digital. It is already set up for all kinds of add on things like boost retard, 2step rev limiting, and lots of other things. For instance all you need for boost retard is to add a MAP sensor. There is an LED diplay on the front with all the buttons built into the case to allow you to control all of the functions, and you can get a readout of the RPM and waht not right there in the engine bay. At $220 its not much more than the MSD 6A but you get a lot more and it doesnt need to go in the junkpile when you add a turbo or N2O.

Hmmm your setup looks different. Shouldn't the tach adapter signal just piggyback to the + - signal from the igniter? This is how I have it:

Red signal wire from Igniter + to Ignition Box
White signal wire from Igniter to - to Ignition Box

MSD 8910 Red wire tapped into red wire for Ignition Box
MSD 8910 White wire tapped into white wire for Ignition Box

Ok I got an 8910 but I'm still having problems. I see that you are using a red signal wire from the Stock Igniter. I dont see any red wires on my igniter, there is a pinkish one, maybe if you could tell me how many wires over from one side or the other it is I could figure it out. I was trying to use the original black (-) coil wire from the igniter to trigger the box and the original Coil (+) for the 12V signal wire with the ignition on. I have the 8910's wire bridging across these 2 connections. Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.

where is the best place to buy ignition systems for the 5mge? thanks.

i've been kind of thinking about that lately since my mileage sucks. i'm getting about 15 mpg right now. of course a heavy foot and 32" tires probably don't help it much.
