Some may be curious about aftermarket ignition system installation.
I installed my Crane today, similar to MSD if you are not familiar with the brand.
I put the main box over the cruise control area with brackets going to the frame. This may not be best as it is near the right edge of the hood where water can enter.
The upgraded coil actually had the same dimensions of the stock coil, so I put it in the stock location, bolted to the igniter.
The tach adapter I put between the coil and fender for now, as the space was perfect for it.
I put the signal to the BOX into the stock coil plug and the BOX had a plug that directly connected to the coil.
It was a pretty smooth install and worked on the first try. Idle appears smoother now, but may just be my imagination. I am doing this in an attempt to get more MPG over long trips, so we'll see what happens.
For power, don't expect much from ignition box upgrades. It's more for peace of mind in my case. I do notice a NICE increase in torque from 2000-3000, right before the AUTO shifts. I did a few WOT runs through the gears, but having the stock header seemed to erase any gains there might have been at the top.
I do recall when I had this same system on my old 85 with headers it really woke up the 3000-5000RPM range.
I have the system setup such that I can plug the stock coil back in if it dies or if I get to hit a dyno for back to back runs.
I think I will try advancing timing next and see if I cant get a little more power out of this thing before 3500RPM.
