Celica XX Rear Side-vents

I guess this is directed at our European and AU brethern on here... Tho I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Mr. Eng knew abnout this as well...

Among the gaggle of parts Mike gave me, there are a set of the rear vents and the ducting that goes on the inside with them. I was gonna bolt them on this weekend, but I had a concern about them before I put them on...

I bolted one on along with the J-shaped duct, and after looking at it, I realized that there is nothing stopping water from coming into the vent... So I am wondering, how are these set up on the cars that come with them?

Bob, on my set when I installed them on the 86 I had +/- a 1/32" gap in the trim gasket on the bottom of the vent if that makes sense. It seems not to be a (water) problem to date but it really wasnt rained much up here either?? Short of blasting the vents with a water hose it looks like they just drain out the bottom when any water fills up??
Have you got the ducts the right way round? The open end inside the car should be pointing upwards. There should also be a rubber flap inside it that sort of works as a non-return valve. Unless you're in 3 foot of water none should get in.
Doh....

Sorry Bob, don't have the answer for this one. I'm still waiting for someone to get these up here in the PacNW.

Yep, our NZ or Euro members will have to answer this one. Looks like Graham has the solution.
Hello,

I have a set just sitting at home waiting to replace the smashed one on my SA63 (When I am bothered getting away from homework). Anyway, there is a gasket between the interal duct inbetween the body...

Here is an illistration of one... Oh... Don't forget about the small bushes which goes into the bodyaround the screws...

Cheers.

Ah hah! thats the two pieces of into I was missing (Thanks Graham!). I was working under the impression the ducts go down... Also, I am missing the rubber flap and the bushings.. Hmmm. Anyone got an extra set of these around?
Did a little search function on this site, but does anyone know why other countries received the vent and the US got the reflector/side light instead?...I'm thinking it was a DOT regulation

P.S. As a side not, If you guys in other countries were wise the next time you were at the junkyard you'd stock up on the Celica XX specific items that the US can't get. Like me with center armrest maplights and rust free sunroof panels(canadians love the latter LOL) :joke: :twocents:

Can't speak for other countries, but in Australia, it's illegal to have lights on the rear quarter panel. Don't ask me why.
A lot of cars do have reflectors there, which is ok, so in theory we could use the red lenses, as long as we didn't have any bulbs in them.
Found out from Chris E that it more than likely is a Department of Transportation thing here in the US-so thanks for the info. It's odd that in some countries adding lights like that are illegal

Map lights are pretty easy to find here. Its the rust free sunroofs he was talking about. Actually I've sold a couple of those to americans, you guys have your share of salt and rust problems too.
Actualy in New Zealand we did get the map lights but all the XX's had side vents even the JDM imports.....and finding them in the junk yards is now a hard thing as there aint a lot being trashed here now.
The side vents are rare as hens teeth... Even here... I did have a set but when I get time are getting sent a broard...

I think the side markers where for the US market only.

To me, side markers makes the car look like UFOs....

Cheers.

Guess ya didn't notice I had them installed too, eh Chris???
Yep, the vents are installed with the ports facing upwards. I too put them in the wrong way and realized they should be pointing up since there are no weepholes or drain ports (we're not counting rust as them just yet!) in the bottom area.

Sidenotes...

Bob, you gonna send them injectors? Pretty please??? I'll pay for the s+h, just lemme know how much!!!

Chris E., will be up in Seattle on Monday or Tuesday, wanna hook up for dinner? Will have some friends w/us, so we'll be drivin' the P.O.S. Durango. PM me if you're interested!

I now return you to your normally scheduled banter!
Actually, I did see them. I just didn't say anything.. :D I need to look at them more in depth one of these days, when I'm not at a place where I'm distracted by a bazillion other cars & a AutoX course 30 yards away.

Am interested in a get-together next week, will PM you later (hella busy @ work). :D
