crank pulley woes!!!

1015 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  williamb82
I am having a serious problem with my crank pulley.....the thing has never been off my 6M yet and I need to do a timing belt and front main. The problem I'm having is the bolt WILL NOT come loose. I tried everything. from putting it in gear and yanking the ebrake, to putting a huge breaker bar on it and cranking the engine over and over and over again and the thing just would not come loose. in my haynes it speaks about a crank pulley holding tool. any idea where I can find one of these? or any other ideas on how to get this thing off. I even tried my 1/2" impact and that wouldn't even do it. I am totally at a loss at this point and I've been driving about 90 miles a day on the interstate and I dont want a broken timing belt on the side of the road

thanks in advance

Open the flywheel inspection plate under the car and turn the engine by hand till you see a large hole in the flywheel. Put a strong thick bar into the hole, then turn the engine by hand till the bar stops the engine from turning.

Finally use an impact gun or wrench with a long bar to undo the bolt. It will come off without the car moving.

The bar in the hole must be strong.
rsdeo is correct.. I use a modified crowbar that has been ground down to jam in between the teeth and I remove the starter and shove it in there to hold the crank. Then I use a 1/2" strong arm and socket AND a pipe to make the strong arm longer... pops off everytime! Dont forget to use a NEW crank bolt and torque to 159 ft lbs ( i used lots of Loc-tite too)
alright I'll go order a new crank bolt and key from toyota and go from there. I figured even if the bolt was stretched a bit I could torque it down (according to the manual 146-174ft. lbs).

This is exactly what I've just done except I'm using the same crank bolt and no Loc-tite but a good 170 ft lbs of torque. I hope it doesn't break off like I heard happen to some. But I thinks it still looks new, only 60K miles on it

And for that crankshaft SST that you get at the pricey dealership is SST-009213-70010 or SST-09330-00021.
Re: crank bolt

yeah, the bolt is only about $7. if you cant get it loose i can come over this weekend and we can get it. ill bring the long peice of pipe i used on the breaker bar.
william
or i can have you come to the shop so we can do it in the shade and concrete to work on :)....I have a 24" breaker bar that should be enough to get it loose if I can get the engine to keep from turning over.

sounds like a plan to me but ill still bring the pipe just in case. what day do you want to do it? im off sat, sun and mon. give me a call and let me know. i get off at 10pm tonight(friday) and should be home by 11 tops.

we got it fixed today. his breaker bar was flexing into a halfmoon, but i got the bolt to break loose. the front main is now sealing like its supposed to. and just an fyi, the front main seal part number at toyota for 6m and 7m engines is 90311-52003
