Does anyone here run an oil cooler on their engine? I'm probably going to install one soon and I want to know the best way to set it up in conjunction with a remote oil filter kit. Do I put the cooler before the oil filter, after the oil filter, or in parallel with the oil filter? Is it necessary to run a thermostat? Any tips or advice appreciated. :)

i run an oil cooler but its the stock 7mgte oil cooler, i plan on installing a bigger one later. as for aftermarket, ,do not run it in parrallel, that will allow unfiltered oil to get to your bearings. personally id put it after the filter so you wont have to worry about any contaminants haveing the chance to clog it even though that is unlikely. but if you put it in line with the filter make sure it will flow enough volume. and try to get an oil cooler with threaded fittings. if it has hoses just clamped to it the pressure could cause them to pop off which would really suck.

Yea, route your cooler after the filter. The hotter oil running through the filter will help it flow better, ie less pressure drop from the filter. I would suggest an oil thermo, as it will help your oil get up to operating temp faster and prevent overcooling of the oil.

Norbie, I have the relocation kit and my pressure is a little down from where it was without it. Would a cooler lower the pressure even further? You know adding more lines for the oil to flow through. Just wondering...

Charles: as Racefiend said, there will be some pressure drop; however if you get a good cooler I expect the pressure drop would be minimal.

JCMF: I don't know what that cooler was for as it was disconnected when I bought the car, however it was originally auto so it was probably a trans cooler.

Shesh,
My Aus. spec. came with the 'works' - pissy 'u' shaped p/s 'cooler' small oil cooler which looks stock and a trans. cooler that might not be stock. And a big engine cooler at the front  I'd eventually like to upgrade the oil cooler and get a real p/s cooler. Adding in the biggish FMIC, I don't know how I'm going to handle airflow to all that. I'd be keen to see photos of how other auto turbo peeps have arranged all their coolers

I'm planning to get the biggest oil cooler I can find and jam it in the inner guard. Getting airflow to it will be a challenge (may have to hack some ducts in the guard), but there's no way I'll get a decent size cooler in the front with all the other crap I have there!

While visiting a yard recently, I pulled an oil cooler which came stock on the Corolla GTS (AE86). I plan on using it as a power steering cooler on my MKIV. The AE86 oil cooler measures (using hands to visualize the part) approximately 6x9. That might be sufficient for the 5M also. If nothing else it's still better than nothing at all.

The second generation RX-7, turbo model only, has a nice oil cooler. It's a long yet narrow part that would fit well amongst all the other sh-tuff up front.

Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.
