It can and has been done, but is it worth doing? Not by a long shot. The Celica engine bay is much smaller than the Supra, so fitting that big inline six in there (and 1JZ's are BIG) is a fairly serious undertaking. As has already been mentioned, handling and chassis balance will suffer as well. On top of this you'll be stuck with the small open diff and live axle found in your Celica - in other words, you'll have huge traction problems until the diff shatters into a zillion pieces (which will take about a day with the torque of a 1JZ).

So why make all these compromises when you can trade your Celica for a Supra? The 1JZ fits like it was meant to go there, handling/balance is not affected (JZ engines are actually slightly lighter than M engines), the drivetrain can cope with the torque, and you'll actually be able to get the power to the ground. On top of this you get all the extra goodies that come with a Supra - P/S, A/C, IRS, 4-wheel discs, 14x7 alloys, nice seats and generally better interior, the list goes on.

In summary: if you want a JZ engine, get a Supra first. Take it from someone who's done it! :)

A RWD 3S-GTE is a great idea but it's not easy (or cheap) to do it in practice. For starters there has never been a factory RWD version; the JDM Altezza (aka IS200) comes with a 3S-GE and there is no turbo option. You also won't find a W5x bellhousing in one of these because they come with a 6-speed. And besides, being a late-model engine they're pretty expensive.

Having said that, if you can afford it it would be pretty sweet dropping an Altezza engine and 6-speed in a Celica. :)

Yeah, what he said. The 1JZ block is about 25mm shorter than the 2JZ, but apart from that the external dimensions are the same.

I still think you're nuts for considering this; engine conversions are hard enough as it is, so why make it harder for yourself? You have a Mk2 so put a 1JZ in that!
