Ok, here's a crazy question from me. My 83 L-type body isn't in the greatest condition, bad oxidation, rust spots, a not-so-pretty brownish colour, no fender flares grrr.

So say I come across a good 5sp supra with a good body that I like with decent paint but has a 5m-ge engine. My car already has a 6m-ge installed I'd like to keep. sooo... exactly how hard would it be for me to swap the engines? What about harnesses and such. Since I already have a 6m-ge installed would I only need to move over the wires or would I have to remove some and splice them back over into the new body?... or would that depend on the year, say the new car is a 82'.
Is this too much trouble to do for me that I'd be better off not even attempting it?

Like I said in another post, I'm not mechanic but I can take things apart and put them back pretty good. Also have a few friends who could possibly help out. I can possibly get ahold of a crane thing and tools I'd need I'm sure.

I beleive the 82-83 wiring harnesses are the same, i do know that not all of them are the same, for example i bought a 6m-ge off someone that had an 85 intake and my car was an 84. The TPS is completely different and i had to end up using my 84 throttle body, the other problem is the vacuum lines...each year they were different it seems i haven't found 2 alike...haha so yes you could do it rather easily if the harnesses are the same but i'm not too sure...hope that helps..

U right forgot about that. I think what u (supraa_luva) have to do is swap the EFI and the EGR system. Use EFI and EGR system from 5mge and put them on the 6mge. Dont quote me on that im no mechanic either.

That's great news! lol. I'm getting excited about this! Would be a good experience also. Not even sure if I can do it yet but I'd like to. I'm not rich so this would be much cheaper than putting flares on my car, getting it painted, getting a LSD... blah blah blah, lol. If it's just a direct swap I may do this! :smilecol:

DOH! don't give me problems, lol. (although that's what I need to find out, problems I could run into)

So since both cars are running and everything just...
leave the 83' 6m-ge EFI, EGR and intake systems on the 83' and put them on the new 5m-ge...
leave the 82' 5m-ge EFI, EGR and intake systems on the 82' and put them on the new 6m-ge

That makes me happy, lol.

If the new car were say an 86' would it still be as straight a swap? It's not but just in case this thing doesn't go through I'll look elsewhere to fulfill my dream, lol.

And thanks very much for the replies. :)

Great. Thanks for the info. Sounds like it should be fairly easy. I hope.

You'll basically be swapping the block and head between the two cars, everything else will stay with their respective cars.
Now dont I feel stupid, yeah this way is easier.

Great. thanks for the replies.
While (I say while although I'm not 100% sure I'm doing this although it's a really good chance I will) I'm doing this swap I could use the completed 5m car while I fix up the 6m engine, would it be a good idea to do certain things since I'd have everything apart? any suggestions?

Metal headgasket? ARP bolts (what are these anyways? )?

no immediate plans aside from the usual mods. I already have headers, exhaust, intake, not much aside from intake pipe, larger throttle body possibly, ignition and stuff that I'll be doing with the engine right now. Next going for shocks and springs and stuff. Doubt I'll go turbo for a very long time :(. No extra income that can go there just yet.

Don't think I'm getting the 82' though. So I gotta hold off with these plans till I find another good bodied P-type with bad engine. :(

I would suggest replacing: Head gasket, Front and Rear Main Seals, and new timing belt
