Hey I'm a new guy but I've been a supra owner for a while and my 85 has developed a problem that I've never seen. I changed the plugs, wires, the cap & rotor, and re-adjusted the timing, accelerater cable, and the car ran great for 3 day. Then all of a sudden I was backing into my drive-way and all of the power left and I could barely back out of the street, it stalled and I couldn't get it to start until the next day, now when I start it if it doesn't start on the first one or two cranks it won't start until hours later  : :?

what kind of plugs did you use? I tried AC Delco and Autolites before I was informed (back when this was a mailing list) that the M series engines hates any other plug other than NGK Plats and one other I think.

I bought new NGKs and it's ran great since.

Other than that, look for vacuume leaks, make sure the intake doesn't have cracks, make sure none of the plug wires popped off, and double check the distributor ( maybe water got in there), last but not least, double check the timing. (did the timing stabilize after you shorted the check connector?)

try the simple stuff first.... then it gets fun!

Sounds like the ignitor may be going out. You can test the ignitor per the factory manual.

Did you short the timing connector when you retimed the engine??

ND are the other plugs used in Supras.

just a small addition, it sounds either like its running very rich or your ignitor is crapped, or possibly the distributor.

ive got ac delcos in my car right now, because they only had 5 NDs and 3 NGK plats in stock at the place i went, and i was too frustrated after chasing across town for parts to go to another place

don't forget the fuel pump. when mine went, it would just cut out at will, even when the car was running. it would work later that day, or for days on end. when i figured it out, if it stalled i would climb under the car and whack at it with a mallet (external pump only  ).

fuel pump in my wifes minivan went last year. it was intermittent, then just died altogether. this one was in the tank.

if you have lots of miles on the car, check or change the fuel pump anyway.

The fuel pump in my 85 went last month, had an 83 sitting around so we swapped to an external pump. The old pump was bad half the time. (enought pressure to idle, but touch the gas and she'd cut out, this went on for a few days, then it just died altogether.

just a question but you said it lost power after you started it on the 3rd day. have you checked where the timing is? the bolt on it...is it still where you remember it being and not to an extreme? i think you know what i mean. the bolt you tighten to lock the dist at a timing. i've forgotten things before did you tighten it all the way(not calling you stupid)?

is it giving you any error codes?
