My 1995 Toyota Celica has white exhaust smoke coming out only when I accelerate and I’m so confused as to what it could be as It only just started happening after I topped up my engine oil yesterday
I had this happen after I overfilled by a litre. I didn't notice anything until I decelerated exiting a motorway. I looked behind and I saw a LOT of grey smoke.
I thought my valve stem seals were leaking, but luckily I double checked my dip stick and noticed the extra oil.
I drained a litre out to drop it to the correct level and the smoking stopped.
Apparently when the oil level is too high the crankshaft hits the oil splashing excessive oil on the cylinder walls. The piston rings can't handle this excessive oil so some of it gets in the combustion chamber.
Seeing that it happened after you topped the oil up, it sounds like it could be the same thing.
Nice thing is, it's a cheap fix!
If it has miles on it, it’s valve seals. If not, it’s a really good idea to go ahead and replace them. Received a letter from the city about that once, and couldn’t reproduce the issue, because I couldn’t be at the gas pedal and the exhaust pipe at the same time.
