Hi ppl
The other day a guy offered me an exhaust system, onetwo pipe if anyone knows that brand.
Anyway - He didn't know much about it unfortunately, it was mounted on a car he just "had standing around".
Far as I could see it is was 2, maybe 2.5 inches with a very nice pipe btw, with 2/2.5inch piping all the way up to the engine.

But will it do any good, or just make a lot of unnecessary noise?

Exhaust helps the engine breath at the higher RPMS, may give better mileage. Noise is a personal taste issue. One man's noise is music to another. If it is too noisy, you can install a resonator upstream of the muffler.

I stuck a 2.25 exhaust on with noticeable improvement over stock.

Yes indeed noise is up to one self, only asking because on my previous car (toyota carina e with turbo) I also had installed a 2.5" exhaust, only result being a lot of noise. It was cool the first few weeks .. but got annoying in the long run.

but as long as there is also a performance gain
....more ..... must have more power (u guys probally know the feeling)

Your gonna find that anything that helps the 5M breath, will get ya a decent return on your investment. The 5M responds VERY well to them. most people with the NA stay between 2.25 and 2.5" exhaust... most say that gives the best gain in a useable powerband.

2.5 inch was a great improvement for my car, even with 20" glass pack and a flowmaster muffler i still put extra sound insulation out of a parts car in the back to quiet it down though. sounds best with windows and sunroof wide open cruising along.

Do it and try out a couple different mufflers if you can-The power increase is there, and the sound can be Modified to suit your taste-My .02-Mike P

Well I fitted a turbo style back box to my stock pipe (old backbox was beginning to blow). I noticed a hell of a difference in the way it revs, so I took it back to the rolling road. I had gained 15bhp and it was 700rpm's higher up too.

Noisy about 2000rpm but it then dies away as the engine begins to breath and then gets louder as I near the 4500rpm. Doesn't kill the ears, but I do notice the resonance causes the rear view mirror to be useless around the 2000rpm area.
