My car needs a new fan clutch and I called my local dealership and they said $145 for it. I think that is kinda high. Would a normal parts store have those? I am asking those who have replaced their's what did they do.

fan clutch replace

i had 2 get another and didnt have the cash for the dealship..so i went 2 napa and yes they have them...its is easy 2 do just 4 bolts from the water pump...the four bolts to get the fan off the clutch take mabey 15 mins...
the part will prolly run 40 bucks at least thats what mine was
$15 from a junkyard off a 92 7mge.

Like new.
Get the clutch fan from a later model MKIII 7MGTE or 92 Landcruiser and the 7MGTE fan as well.

Nice OEM upgrade!!
The NAPA ones are junk...went through two of 'em in one year on the '84, finally bought a slightly used OEM one from someone on this board...no problems since.

7mg fan blows more are so it prolly takes more hp (a few) from engine.
If u have stock or lightly modded 5mg than and u never had overheating problem before then you're prolly better with 5mg fan clutch (if u want
that last few hp)
145 for a 5MGE fan clutch???? That's WAY TOO HIGH!!!!!! I paid under $30 something I believe for a 5ME fan clutch for the Silver Slug. I have had to purchase a fan clutch several years ago for the 85 Redpra & it was still under $40 something (both were Toyota FC's).

Check w/ Jeff Watson @ Champion Toyota in Houston, a 5MGE fan clutch won't cost $145 if you order from him.
There really should be no need for an upgraded fan or clutch on a NA Mk2 if the whole cooling system is up to snuff. You can get Hayden fan clutches for about $50 at most parts stores. Looks like Jeff list prices the fan clutch at 132.44 so you would probably get it for about $100 + shipping. Also I've heard Tundra V6 fan clutch are cheaper and are a direct fit on 7M.

I got a Hayden Fan clutch back in July and it got stuck like three months later, cost me precious HP at Vegas
I got a Hayden fan clutch a couple years ago.
It locked up so the fan was on all the time. Luckily it happened after 11 months and had a 12 month warranty! Got it replaced free. So far so good on the second one.
Since nobody's suggested it yet, I'll mention it...
In most situations, the fan clutch goes out because of the viscous fluid leaking out of the unit. You can rebuild them by just purchasing from the dealership the fluid that goes inside. I think the fluid is about 10 bucks, but I could be wrong...
well, all i have to say is DON'T BUY NAPA went through 2 in 24 months got pissed and converted to electrical in my 84 before the 5m blew up (that wasn't the cause)......dealership prices are always expensive..

never heard of the fluid crap...never....lol nice suggestion.
