Not really mean. I came here because my first car was a white with burgundy interior, 1982 Celica Supra. Bought for $835 and shipped from Prospect, OR for $120. After putting blood, sweat, tears, and $200 for a steering rack and another $100 for the tune-up kit. The driver window was rebuilt personally and so was the driver wiper motor. Neither worked. With no bill of sale, I paid market-value through the DMV which was $1,500, adding another $250 onto my grand total. ($100 for licensing + $150 market tax) I was thrilled to finally drive her home for the first time from Bainbridge Island where I fixed her. The final bill came to about $1,200. Then I spent $350 on tires. Week one involved removal of the steering rack and the fixing of the driver window motor. Week two meant putting the new one on and aligning the tires along with fixing the wiper. Week three was brake bleeding and finally driving home.
Driving onto the ferry to Seattle was a pain. On the boat, car alarms went off. Then people would set the alarm again so the quick 'beep' would sound. Being cute, I tapped my horn, starting a war between the teens. I am 16 and the other six people honking were around there, too. Then, halfway to Seattle, a car alarm went off and the boat seemed to 'lose power.' The horn sounded like the Emergency Alarm on the boat itself. I thought to myself, "Shit, now the boat is sinking, I'm never gonna get my Supra."
After a 45 minute ride, I disembarked and started my journey home on I-90 East to Issaquah. Having and exhaust leak and a muffler which the welds were broken, the car sounded cool. Going 65 on the freeway, she was holding constant 3,500 RPM - Shift Speed. However, the fifth gear was the one I was in and there was nowhere to go. I had to listen to the loud, broken exhaust for the whole trip while the poor alignment and bald tires were trying to kill me alongside the windy bridges.
I finally made it home on October 26, 2009 at 8:47 PM and decided to take my dog and little brother for a ride. My dog is used to going for rides in our family truck, so I opened the hatch and he jumped in. I was used to driving sticks, but he wasn't used to riding in them. My little brother loved it. I enjoyed my little sports car. I actually loved it. I drove it to school and a buddy of mine was very jealous. He had a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I took him around the block and showed him what that little 168.4 CI engine could do. I spun the tires and threw a quick drift and he went ape shit on wanting one.
I continued driving it all over the place; to work, school, quick little runs here and there and loved every time I drove it. I couldn't get enough. A fill-up cost $32.00 from an eighth of a tank. I got about 300 miles per fill from that 16 gallon tank. Average of about 22 Miles per gallon, passing a million smiles per gallon. I got looks everywhere I went. I found a fun game but felt bad because it was domestic violence and abuse to the poor car. I would be in first gear, handbrake set. With a little gas, I'd 'hump' the clutch, making the back-end of the car dip and appear to 'teabag.' Occasionally I'd still abuse it and do quick drags off of red lights. It was a pretty fast car, I got her to top out at 128MPH.
Less than one month after I parked her in my driveway for the first time, she caught fire. The one thing I forgot to do in all of my repairing and maintenance, etc. was buying and installing a part that was less than $4.00. It happened to be a battery mount. A small rubber grip that goes over the battery and bolts to the battery tray. I didn't have one. So, Monday, November 26, 2009 at 9:46 AM after leaving school at 9:00 for throwing up, while making a 90 degree left-hand turn, my baby died. She has before so I thought nothing of it. While rolling, I tried starting with the key twice and then compression-starting twice. -Nothing-. So I pulled to the side of the road. Then a quick fluff of thin smoke indicated something bad... The last time this happened, The car started on its own after coming to a complete stop. It didn't smoke then. So me, stupid as I am, open the hood to see a small fire. So I close the hood and call 911, only to be hung-up on by the dispatcher after disclosing my location. Sitting with my phone on my ear for 4 minutes while watching with my baby burning with nobody on the other line pissed me off. I called again and finally got a firetruck sent out. My car was reduced to a smoldering pile of melted tubes and rubber.
It has been a month since the fire and I can't shut up about it. I cannot forgive myself for the carelessness of the lack of a battery mount. I am looking for another one and still have a good portion of my baby left. All of the body is good minus the hood, I finally got the smoke smell from the interior, and the $350 tires are still good. I am never going to give up on my Supra. I never named her, but I wish I did.
Total Cost of Car:
Car....................$835
Trailer................$120
Steering Rack......$200
Tune-Up Kit........$100
Window/Wiper.....$70
Title/Licensing.....$250 +
Total.....................$1585
I paid $1200. So with the $385 I saved, I should have bought a Fire Extinguisher and a battery mount. I would still have my baby and be a lot happier.
Mark my words, I WILL get another Supra. Someday soon.
