Hey all -

I took the Redpra in for a respray last week....went in to check on it today - it looks great so far. I have a question, though - the painter told me that he had found that the car originally came with "gravel guard" - rough "texture" below the rubber door and quarter-panel mouldings which supposedly helps protect against chips from gravel thrown up from the road (though I'm not sure how well this would work!). There was a crappy-looking after-market decal below the mouldings when I bought the car. The painter told me that he believes the car came with this "gravel guard" from the factory because he found it under the original mouldings. The car is from British Columbia...was this ever offered up there as an option?? He took the liberty of replacing it...looks fine, but I've never seen it on any other Supra down here. Anyone else seen this before?

Just curious....Bob

My current silver car (US spec of course) has a really light gravel guard below the mouldings. You can see it on cars that still have their original paint.

Hmmmm....my '84 never had it; I bought the car when it was two years old and of course still had the factory paint (finally got it redone in the factory colors about five years ago)...and I don't remember ever having seen any other MkIIs with it - though I admit I've never specifically looked for it!!

It's usually the crinkle like paint behind the back wheels. Mine's an '86 but I don't know if the earlier ones had this.

Who knows, it could be an 85+ feature. You can see where Toyota masked it off past the rearmost moulding on my car. Its not a really heavy gravel guard like some cars have. I know 90-96 300ZXs have about a 3 to 4" wide gravel guard on the bottom from the factory (much heavier texture though). I reapplied that stuff on many a 300Z. Its basically rubberized undercoating that gets painted over.

I have a coating in my wheel wells and most of my undercarriage, its pretty easy to peel right now, it's probably about 15 years old, is this the same thing you're talking about Bob?

Might be rubber?

I think that the black bottom stripe was custom installed.
There was an original SUPRA lettering that came as an option on 84s
But regarding the rough black thick paint was original, I even had it below the door molding, very very sure it is original.
I only wish all cars had the under coating in the wheel well , cause my black car has it and thats why I found allmost no rust after removing the flare. :)

my '83 P-type has the rough texture on the bottom half of the car; i live in Alberta, Canada.

on a side note, the dipsh*t who owned my Supra before me had the car repainted; the color he chose was a medium metallic blue, but he didn't get the car undercoated, so it's still dark metallic blue underneath. also he didn't replace the original factory side mouldings; so he had some half-assed flat plastic moulding put on the car. i realized this when i was adoring the angled pics of Malloy's Supra; i went outside to investigate my car, and i noticed that the half-assed trim didn't fill the notches in the fender flares.

i hate to admit this, but on the outside, my Supra is a damned lemon. the very bottom of the quarter panels are far too rusty and underneath the rear bumper it's rust infested as well. on both bumpers, the paint is chipped and cracked; my brake discs are rusty, as are the wishbones. also, the rubber bushings on the suspension are all cracked; the shocks and struts are worn out, and the motor leaks a tiny bit of oil from time to time and it burns a bit as well. although, other than these oil issues, the drivetrain is fairly strong.

i'm just a 17 year old with a $7/hour sh*t job, and i can't afford to fix all of the things i want to on my car when my insurance is $230 a month for liability only. oh well, i guess that's what you get when somebody buys a used car for you without you seeing it first. when i first set my eyes on the car, i though it was in excellent shape; i soon found out otherwise

-Evan (i still love my Supra to death, though)

p.s. sorry for going on a rant here, i just get mad at my car and the previous owner for all of these imperfections.

wow I was always wondering what that bumpiness was down there, I thought that's just what happened to the paint right there after like 10 years, LOL both of my 85s had it, if I wasn't so lazy I'd go check my 84 right now, but I'm glued to my seat :D

Hey I didnt know we had another Calgarian here...right on :D
Your car sounds like mine :( It was repainted badly, has the flat strip molding (must have been a sale) and all the rust issues. On a side note I also have the gravel guard.
I'll send you a PM.

my 82 terra-cotta L-type did not have the rubber/textured paint but my 2-stage metalic black 85 P-type does. And they both are wearing the original factory paint jobs.

LOL - I handpicked those moldings from our local U-Pull-It, and I handpainted them. Ask Mikey about the drivers rearmost piece!

I though it was the pervious owner of my car, had sent it to get a bad paint job on my 85 blackpra. I guess its that "gravel guard"
Yeah, I thought the same thing. But I also thought, why is it only the lower half that looks like that...and so I had a suspicion it served some purpose...a gravel guard!

I think it's a good thing..with all the driving I've done, I've noticed that there isn't one single chip down there...I only wish the front bumper had this stuff as well because that's where most of the chips happen... :(
