At a car show yesterday I talked to the owner of this modified 1957 Healey MM 100/6. He'd raced it for decades and coincidentally he explained to me that it has installed in it a W-58 transmission from a 1985 Supra. He was quoting ratios which I never really bothered to learn much about but I learned that he also had a W-56 Toyota truck transmission and that he would swap transmissions depending on the race series or course; the truck transmission for shorter courses and/or autocross and the Supra transmission for road courses with long straights.

Anyways, after coming home I looked up the ratios for comparison and here they are.

W-56
  • First Gear: 3.954:1
  • Second Gear: 2.141:1
  • Third Gear: 1.384:1
  • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
  • Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
  • Reverse: -4.091:1
W-58
  • First Gear: 3.285:1
  • Second Gear: 1.894:1
  • Third Gear: 1.275:1
  • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
  • Fifth Gear: 0.783:1
  • Reverse: -3.768:1

I sold my W58 transmission from my blue 83 Supra back in 2016. It was to a guy into British sports cars but at the time I think he said he was dropping it into an MG. The name of the guy who bought it was Scott. Just curious if this car has my old transmission.

W58s are a pretty popular option for older British roadsters of varying manufacturers. I've installed the conversion kits along with doing trans rebuilds for several locals.
