I just installed a newly rebuilt diff and for the first 2 or 3 weeks everything went fine. I started hearing a slight clunk when making a slow right hand turn and it is slowly getting louder and more noticable. I had the right and left axles pushed up out of the way and I'm wondering if that could have affected the universal joints. They have 260K+ on them. Anyone ever have one go bad? Is there a way to check them? (the boot is still in tact)

Check to make sure your rear axles aren't popping out.

On my first MK2, I had messed with the rear a couple of times and one of the stubs on the left started to pop out.

Also check driveshaft u joints.

U-joints are new but I do suspect the stubs. It is noticably on the right side. I'm not sure what the "stubs" are though. Could you elaborate more?
