i was driving my car today and it started heating up so i pulled over and stopped the car thinking i just got a BHG. the Temp fluctuated up and down from almost reaching red to normal operating temp. i have changed the thermastat but no difference at all

anyone have any advice

is it just the gauge rising and falling or you really had a overheat

Is it a big sweeping change in the temp guage needle???

Either you have a really big air bubble in the coolant system (you need to get the air out), or your temperature gauge sending unit is crapping out. The sending unit is located on the engine block behind the distributor. Kind of hard to see & access, unless you take the distributor cap off.

Well actually its my car that’s heating up, I was to tired had just come from school and removed the engine from zank’s 84 mk2. He was on line and I told him to post. Anyways the car has been doing this for about the past five days. One thing that ive noticed is that the engine spits out my coolant out in to the reservoir over filling it. I also change the thermostat thinking that was the problem but it still over heats. I will change the radiator cap see if that helps and check the heat sensor thing. This problem to me is weird since ive have my blue auto mk2 overheat before and his is noting like his type of overheating. For starters the car doesn’t seem to lose any power, the coolant is been spat out that was one reason why I changed the thermostat, the temp gauge needle fluctuates drastically from normal to the red zone and it does it periodically.
Now about this air bubble pocket thing how would I go about getting it out- flushing the water out? And would it have done damaged my head. One thing to consider is that I have driven my car like this for about 240miles.

You may be alright, especially since it's been cold lately and not in the upper 90's here in SoCal!
If you have air in the system, most times you'll hear a gurgling sound when you turn your heater up to max with the rpm around 2000. If you hear this, you've got air!
Easiest way to get rid of that air bubble is to park the car with the front end up in the air, put the heater on (to flush the air outta the heater core in the car) and open the radiator cap(do this when the engine's cold!).
Let the engine come up to temp and watch for the thermostat to open. As soon as it opens, you'll see the water get a little bubbly and start moving. I like to rev the engine up s l o w l y to about 1500 rpm a few times while I'm doing this just to get it moving a bit.

Every darn time I do anything to the Cooling system on my car, it needs to be burped!-Does it have Colic?-My wife thinks that me going out to "Burp the Supra" is Hilarious :roll: -I just run it till it gets hot-Take off cap for flush thats on heater hose-and watch air come out-Takes care of it normally-And it will do just what you describe if I dont "pat its back"-Air bubble appears to start in hose that runs to HSV from Engine- Mike P
