HELLO!

Ive been lurking here for a little bit and i must say, this is one of the most tech savy forums ive been on!

Now on to official business, Im a mopar guy at heart, owning two older Plymouths including my baby a 1969 barracuda 340. However, i fell in love with the lines of the mkii after seeing one sit at a local impound for a while and after looking at the performance/mpg of these cars i decided to look into buying one.

The 85 ptype im looking at has no rust on the hatch (yay!), a small bit on the rear lower qtrs and no rips in the interior at all. The problem is that the automatic transmission doesnt go into drive. It will drive forward a very short distance, but will stop and not go any further. It drives in reverse fine. The question is, and dont hate me for asking, is this common?

Also, the guy has a mkiii with an auto that had a tree fall on it, is it worth buying as a donor for the 85? Like will the the tranny bolt up? Im unsure about this one though because it looks like someome was messing around under the hood, belts loose, sensors disconnected etc. BUUT if it does turn out to be a runner, would it be worth it to swap the engine and trans in or would the effort not be worth it due to a marginal increase in power?

Thanks, im sorry ahead of time if any of my questions are already answered.

if you are going to go through all the trouble of an engine swap, then might as well go all the way and just get a 7MGTE. to me there is no point in swapping in a non-turbo 3.0 because the slight increase in power will not be worth it. you should just find a manual tranny and swap that onto your 5M in that case. i've never heard of an auto locking up like yours, but anything is possible. i would never own an auto to begin with though.

where in SE PA are you? we have a lot of locals in the area who could help you do any kind of swap.

If the MKIII stuff is free to really cheap, it is a decent swap to do. How mush is the seller asking for the 85 and/or everything together you want?

Also I will be the first one to demand pics of the Mopars. (there are many of on here that still love old muscle cars).

Preston, snag both cars, get an engine swap harness from Junkie in Washington state, enjoy the turbo engine with the auto tranny in the mkII.
Well, that's the short version anyway.
If you need a hand sometime, let me know. I'm about 40 minutes away from you.
I'm not sure if the MKII and MKIII autotrannies are swapable, but I'm sure someone will chime in.
Also, any idea what year/color and color the interior is in the MKIII is? I may be interested in some of the parts off it for my MKIII.
Good way to make some money back on the car.

Light silver and gray cloth. The only things id take from that if i were you would be the front seats forward. everything else has been dirtied up pretty good. door panels dash and console are pretty decent. rear seats are covered in glass so i dont know how you feel about glass in your glutes haha.

At that price, grab them both NOW. You can make some money off of the parts that you do not end up using. And even if you do not, it is still an awesome deal.

The auto trannies are not compatible between the two. The dimensions are different and the electronics are different. Shawn (not Junkie anymore, I've forgotten his new forum name) may be able to help with the electronics, but first off, don't write off the original tranny just yet. The fact that it won't stay in drive may merely mean that it is low on fluid. Got to have steady hydraulic pressure to stay in gear and sucking an air bubble will kick it out of gear. If there's any rust at all, then the car is probably not worth putting in as much effort as a full 7mgte swap. Mabe grab the pair for a grand and look for a more solid mk2 chassis if you're looking to make a hobby out of this.

The rust that the mkii has is nothing compared to mopar rust, you guys should consider yourselves lucky for that bit that happens on the hatch and sometimes qtrs. Just the passeger side qtr has a bit on it, no clear coat pealing or anything either. Im not really looking into pumping a super duper big amount of money into it, hence why if i get the 2nd car and shelling out 2 grand i wanted to use it for parts (not knowing about the tranny differences).

About the trannys, is common for the early toyota autos to get airbubbles?
Whats the easiest way to fix this, just add fluid/maybe new filter?

Thanks again for putting up with me
