Hey gang,

I just wanted to take a survey of all the guys with stock mk2's. How many litres of oil do you add and after how many kilometers?

Leak

Its just that the seal around the pan is such a pain to replace, so I also have a little leak. ~.6 per 5-600 km.

I burn about 1 quart/300 miles or .9 liters /480 Km. The bottom end has 229K miles (366,000 Km) on it, unrebuilt, and I don't drive the car much, so the oil use is not a big deal to me.

Be careful. This was the cause of the fate of my original 5m-ge.

When I was working at a job that was 25 miles from me I used to have to put in almost a quart a month. Then the hotter months came around (gets to 100 where I was working), then a bridge went out so I had to drive about 15 miles more one way which was 30 miles a day more, 150 miles a week, which was 600+ a month. Didn't think much on the oil situation till one night of driving.... BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... clunk.... scraaaaaaape scraaappppe... there went the engine, siezed up good.

i use about 1 qt every 1500 miles I'm leaking and burning a little, but my oil burns funny... It will only build up and shoot out blue smoke when i sit idling for awhile. Non ever on start up only while sitting at idle and then when i take off it puffs a blue cloud

I use 0.5 quarts per 3k miles. And that is with my driving and autocrossing. I drive fast and hard, shifting at 4000-5500rpm even when taking it easy. I autocross atleast 4 times per oilchange, having anywhere from 6-10runs per event. There I shift at 5800 and usually have to run second gear up around 6500 as to avoid a shift before my braking point. If you watch my videos, there is a black puff that comes out around 6000rpm when I'm trying real hard.

Valve seals usually do that. I have had three mitsubishi's in my family, each having the same problem with the same solution. Have you tried Castrol's 100,000 mile+ motor oil yet? If not, I highly suggest it. It fixed two of the three problems (caravan-v6 and duster-v6), only the 3kgt had to be sent in to get valve seals replaced due to my silly mom driving for about 10 miles with no oil. I also had a boat that would use about 1qt per 1hr of running. Changed it out with that Castrol stuff, it used a quart in 10hrs, used the next quart in 45hrs, and it has yet to lose any more.

Worth a try, 20w50 is what I have found works best.

my 5mge leaks 0.25 quart every 6 weeks from oil pan plug......there is no loss through seals or by rings otherwise it would be time for a freshening.........

I've got a bad valve seal leak on my exhaust side, i think its the the #5 valve from the front. I believe its the exhaust side since the oil doesnt smell like its being burned until after the header is heated up fully(does that seem correct?). I dont have a CAT. The entire engine was fully rebuilt under 10K miles ago and the seal(s) have probably been bad for 8K, they have just been getting worse. I burn around 1 quart a month or more if I run the engine hard. I havent had the time to replace the valve seal but when I do i'm gonna replace all six on the exhaust side. I have seals made by Beck//Arnley. Anyone used that kind before? Are they gonna last? The heavier the oil the better? I have been using 15W-50 Mobile1 Syn during the summer and 5W-30 during the winter. Does that sound good?

well I don't know if this still apply to me but on my old original 5M on my MK2 burns oil, leaks, broken seals.... well to sum it up I have to put 1 qt of oil every 3 days and that is driving to work and school everyday... I know this is one of the worst... but the motor is still strong as hell.... I don't do any oil change just the filter every 3000 miles for what is it worth if you change oil every 3000 miles if you put oil every 3 days

I just miss that old 5M for I can make a cloud of smoke without doing a burn out LOL

High mileage engines typically do burn and/or leak some oil. The seals get hard and brittle and leak. Carbon and varnish builds up on the pistons and rings which can make the rings stick, etc.. The problem is that carbon is formed when oil is burned and that really fouls things up. The 02 sensor, cat. converter, pistons and rings, etc. all suffer from the effects of burning oil.
