Ok, I have read stories about mk2s taking out eclipses, miatas, suvs, hondas, nissans, etc. I have taken old cars (that damn caddy), a riced miata, v6 mustang(95 I think, it was an auto), and a few other slower imports. I have never been able to take the likes of an eclipse, 3000gt, celica (newer ones), or anything that is decently quick. Is it just MY car?? I have an 85 p-type auto with 109,000 toyota maintained miles. It is loads of fun to drive, but nowhere near as fast as the mk2s I keep reading about. Now when I rebuild this thing, and add the turbo................

Well 145, 160, or 161 hp isn't a whole lot in modern cars. The automatic doesn't help either. Most of the usual four cylinder cars shouldn't be a problem, but you'll have a lot of trouble with 6 cylinder cars. Most 6cyl cars these days are well over 200+ hp and don't weight that much more than a MkII. A lot of the hi po 4cyl car make impressive power #s but the overall power band sucks (i.e S2000). Going with a 6M with a few basic mods will really help out a MkII, and a turbo should really wake a MkII up. Of course maybe it is just you . I blew away an Integra on the freeway today. Damn that thing had a loud #$& exhaust. I could hear him coming from 20 cars back :turn-l:

Don't feel bad about the Celica; those things are pretty fast (light to light, anyway). I had one playing with me last summer and it beat me twice (about 1 1/2 to 2 block pulls, so nothing real fast). He never could pull away from me, but I never got further then the middle of his door...

Its like Silver Mk2 said, its about powerband. I know that my car is well below some of the cars I've beaten (ie 944 on the freeway), but being able to use my lower power band instead of waiting for high revs really helps (and the fact that I have a 5-speed :wink: )

Ok now i am confused.....what the hell is the hp rating of your US supra's.......Here in New Zealand we run 170-175 hp std out of a 5m......thus enough to take out quite a few cars.

i think the US spec 5M-GE tops out at 161hp? Or tehre abouts
It also depends on the year of manufacture
Our 5M-GE's are JDM spec and come out at 170-175
But we never got them in supras...only cressida's

They were rated at 160bhp when new. Most today are a good 20-40hp under that due in large part to wear/age.

Most 4bangers (most all honda's), older V6's, and heavy things like SUV's and trucks a slightly modded 5m-ge would tie or beat. Aside from that you'll have a very hard time keeping up with most 6ers, especially being automatic.
In the quarter mile a tenth of a second translates to a car length about, so an automatic would fall like 5 cars behind a manual in the same race. Doesn't seem alot on paper but when you get out there it's alot.
My 6m-ge can tie a brand new mustangGT and beat out a stock 5.0 but that's as far as I go. turbo eclipses, 3000gts, b16 civics and CRX's, I can't touch yet.

If you go turbo that's another story...

[edit] while searching around for quarter mile times I found this http://www.car-videos.com/performance/distance.asp?dist=1320 it has the 84' supra as 16.4. Figure a 6m-ge will do in the low 15's and a turbo setup I've heard some of the guys around here doing under 14's with stock internals.

It's all about that automatic. Our 1st 83 was an auto, and , sorry to say, a dog compared to the 5-speed. Yes, actual usable torque helps us beat the 4cyl., but I'm sure that those of us who beat 6cyl. cars that are 15 years newer are the ones who push the revs, know when and how to shift, and don't mind fixing things fairly regular (I blew a heater hose last time I redlined my 82 - messy messy).

I wonder if there a shift kits for the mk 2's automatic?

I've raced an MX-6 before and they have nothing. I wasn't even finished with 3rd and he gave up. Oh the BMW Ti's, the ones that looks like they didn't have enough metal to finish the rear, are SLOW as well.

I've also raced a MKII Supra around my neighborhood and it was pretty much neck and neck. I'm sure he was stock but I had headers, exhaust, and intake. I was really hoping I'd atleast pull away from him a little. *shrugs shoulders* :?

humm are you sure he was stock. if you had I/H/E you should of walked away from him. well at least that happened to me (black Stock) when i raced HCogeHC's mk2 with I/H/E.

my stocker stayed next to an s10 with v-8! a lot has to do with driving. or just tune up has to be very well done not average. mines all stock with a few things changed like timing, mas, custom plugs and wires. believe it or not plugs make the difference, we are talking tenths of a sec in quarter mile. wires as well type and size and purpose of.
