I have a 84 supra with the w58 i have a 4.8 ls sitting in the garage. to they make an adapter? i dont want to go t56 unless i have to. I cant seem to find anything here
thanks in advance
phillip
Why would you want to since its probably going to break the first time you get on it? They have a hard time surviving behind a 2JZ. There is a R154 to LS one, but the R154 are expensive and suck as well. Honestly an adapter bellhousing and clutch is going to cost like a third or more of a T56 cost.
Thanks for your response but I was simply asking if a solution existed not if it was good enough. a 4.8 is the smallest of the family and is under 300 at the engine.
So once again is there such an adapter?
thanks again
Not any more. Back in the '90s and early 2000s we used to have a Yahoo Group for Mark 2 Celica Supras. This current forum started up in the Spring of 2003 from the members of that old group. Look for members with join dates of 2003 or thereabout. Many of us had Mark 2 Supras that we'd bought new in the '80s but we really didn't get into heavy modifying and engine/transmission swaps till the 90s because by then the warranty expired. So one of the first things we came up with for making more power and speed was turbocharging the 5mge by way of a CT-26 along with an RRFPR, then suddenly about '97 there were hundreds of 6mge engines available from Japan and we'd turbo them, too. Then swapping the 7mgte from the Mark 3 became popular until the 2jz became widely available. One constant through the years is that early on it became an accepted fact that the W-58 was not reliable when mated to high horsepower engines. There are still plenty of people who do keep the W-58 when doing an engine swap, Like me, but not enough that a vendor would invest in aftermarket support for a transmission that works great behind a 22RE and other four bangers and low hp sixes.
I'm not trying to give a history lesson here; just trying to clarify things a little bit. The solution you're hoping for doesn't exist because the W-58 wasn't good enough.
If there isn't a market for it for the reasons listed above, it probably doesn't exist. 4.8 and 2JZ are both about 300 lbft of torque.
You could always find a local machine shop and get one created.
No, there is good reason you cant seem to find anything here - we found out early on that there was a good reason why Toyota did not mate the W-58 with the 7mgte or the 2jzgte. The W-58 even has a hard time surviving behind a built 2jzge. You can find an adapter for ls to R154, in fact I've seen several different vendors that have had them available over the years. That used to be the go-to transmission for swapping into the Mark 2 behind a turbo swap or 1UZ V-8. But the R-154 has become way expensive and they suck as well for what you're paying for them.
I WISH there was a good cheap strong 5 speed out there but unfortunately high torque kills transmissions; especially manual transmissions.
Horsepower as you know is only a measure of torque applied over a distance of time.
This is how you can have ultra high horsepower engines that can be mated to weak transmissions and survive.
A perfect example is the Honda S2000; it has quite a lot of horsepower, but this power is the result of very high RPM.
With the LS V8 that you have, even most lame version made has a lot more torque yet less horsepower than the S2000’s little 4 cyl engine.
Even tho the S2000 can get away with a twig of a drive train @250 hp it does not mean that drive train can cope even with a 150 horse V8 because the V8 even tho it has potentially less numerical horsepower churns out far too much torque for the little S2000’s drive train parts.
This same situation exists for the W5X and the R15X series transmissions.
Unaviodably some one will point to the 2JZ turbo as not killing its transmission; while this is kinda true the situation is they do not last even behind the 2JZ if you're on boost constantly.
If you're nice, the R15X series will last, but only if you just daily drive with occasional spirited fun.
This same problem exists for the T5 in the mustang, they work, but if you're always in the power then the little 5.0 will kill the T5.
Overall the situation kinda stinks if you want lots of torque and want a manual transmission.
So far the only decent options are the following.
Older manual 4speed transmissions that once were cheap but now kinda over priced.
I have covered the same ground that you embarking upon and the responses above are all valid. I initially began looking for a W58 solution, but eventually ended up with a R154 solution... Although I never did use the items...
In addtion to acquiring an R154 and Advance Adapters kit, and other parts. I also sourced a direct swap Input shaft that mates a Small Block Chevy clutch to the R154. I think I also ended up with a Land Cruiser slave cylinder.
With that said however, I abandoned the LS project and never used the parts...
Advance Adapters Bell Housing NEW 712567V (R154 to LS motor) $200 + Shipping
Input Shaft for R154 NEW (89060099) to adapt from Toyota clutch to GM SB clutch. $75 + Shipping
thanks carlos. i am not sure what route to take at the moment.
