If all you want to know is if you have the pre or post 89 just count the ECU pinout counts. If my info is right 87-88 are 10, 18, and 24 pin connectors. 89 and up should have 26, 16, and 22 pin . There is a Japanese EPC out there from what I've heard. If you can find it that would probably be the best way to find what you have.

it has gray clips and a 26p 16p 22p pin count. so this means it's an 89+. I still need to know the exact year to do the wiring don't I? Or is 89-92 the same?

thanks for the help so far.

You need to know what year your engine harness is.The plugs that go into the computer on 89-92 are the same, the plugs that are "body harness" plugs are different. The body harness plugs are what are needed to power it all up.I know there are other methods, but this seems to be the least intrusive, least amount of "in car" soldering.
