Our constant transmission woes are making me think about adding a trans oil cooler. The Aisin AR-5 Transmission is basically an R154 so this kit should work but I plan to make something a little more cost efficient https://www.driftmotion.com/Driftmotion-Manual-Transmission-Oil-Cooler-Kit-p/dm3561.htm perhaps with this to save the need for wiring a fan https://derale.com/products/fluid-coolers/transmission/series-10000-stack-plate2013-10-28-09-53-271253202964

Anyone having problems with the r154 shifting between 3rd and 4th?
We have been through 6 transmissions in 3 years the basic symptom is that on the up shift it will pop straight out of 4th gear when you release the clutch, you can hold the shifter and it will stay in gear sometimes with a clunk or grind. Eventually it gets to the point where it will not go into 4th.

I had a friend pull one of our failed transmissions apart and he found that "the parts are actually still all in good usable shape but everything in the transmission is covered in a fine layer of powdered steel including the grooves in the baulk ring which i think is preventing the brass from getting traction on the steel and essentially acting like they are worn out. getting the powder to come out seems to take quite a bit of manual effort.

I'm fairly certainly this is due to overheating the oil but if you wanted to get fancy you would be served well by putting a filter in that oil cooler circuit. You could also get fancy on the oil return circuit and have it spray the 3rd gear, the intermediate gear and the baulk rings of 3rd and 4th to keep them as cool as possible and to also flush out the metallic dust."


So I ordered this bad boy yesterday http://www.jegs.com/i/Moroso/710/41200/10002/-1 Filter and cooler all in one and a Marco UP2 Oil Transfer Pump, along with banjo fittings and a one way valve. Hopefully I can find some place under the car to mount all of this!

Next race is Road Atlanta in December with LeMons

Endurance racing brings out the weak links in every car. I've been lucky so far with transmissions but the diff required a cooler.

You might try fabricating a duct and "cold air" box for the cooler somewhere in the engine bay and venting out the hood. Shorter oil lines and more protection for the cooler/filter.

If the Supra is still in one piece after the October AMP weekend I'll be at Road Atlanta for the Lemons race, too.

There are no garages available at RA. Most of the paddock is not flat, either... and there are only a few power outlets.

The track is worth it.

Wow Road Atlanta!
What an awesome racetrack. We struggled with snow and rain but eventually the track dried out. The last hour was the best hour of racing I have done. Unfortunately on Saturday we had a rear brake line fail and this cost two stops, first one was diagnosis and wind the brake balance to all front and then 4-5 laps later the fluid dropped as some must have been getting past so we blocked it off at the master cylinder. This resulted in a very firm pedal and some sketchy moments in traffic on a wet track but I did manage to get down to 1:57 in the wet with only front brakes. the 25 minutes in the pits was the difference in laps between 13th and potentially 3rd not to mention adding a stop on Sunday so I could have a dry hour.

The transmission cooler/filter seemed to do it's job, the trans lasted the whole race but I'll wait for one more before declaring victory and pushing the Solstice automatic to the back of the garage. We all went to 16 inch wheels (225/50/16 Falken Azenis 615k+) this gave us good top speed on the back straight with a slight loss of speed out of the corners if we got slowed down by traffic.

Been a while since I checked in here.

We ran the WRL Mid Ohio race this past weekend, car ran real good Saturday and we picked up 2nd place in GP2, the diff said enough on Sunday costing us a bit over an hour for a careful replacement with through cleaning of bits of metal.

Have not been here for a while, figured I should post an update.
The Ecotec powered Celica has had a good run in 2019, we placed 4th at April PittRace Lemons event despite rain and very limited visibility and then won the overall at Gingerman in June thanks to good fuel milage strategy and the lead car (Mk1 MR2) taking itself out in the final hour of the race. The car has been suffering from poor gearing sine we destroyed the 4.10 rear end at Mid Ohio, currently have 3.6 gears that combined with 16 inch wheels really bog the car down out of the turns, it does save some gas and has helped drivers to maintain momentum on the track. I have a 3.91 gear set being prepared now so we should ne in better shape for the next race in Topeka August 24/25 and rumored to be a small field we are hoping for another good showing.

Now that I have just read the Lemon story for the first time I feel deprived for not being more attentive to the Toylet project. Admirable work there.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, its been a fun ride!
I just picked up 4.10 gears from a member here so we should be even faster at Topeka next weekend.

Congratulations on the overall win, Brett!! Persistence and a bit of luck is what you need to win in Class A - and you've certainly been persistent!

We had a good run at Topeka, finished 3rd overall and clocked the fastest lap of the weekend. We were in contention for the overall win but had a rear control arm bolt fall out, it cost 6 minutes in the paddock to replace and fortunately no damage. I replaced the bushings with urethane maybe three years ago and have not checked those bolts for a while. Also a couple of black flags avoiding spinning cars in the wet cost a few laps. Ended up 4 laps back form the winning Pontiac Solstice that runs the same engine as the Celica.
I had a blast running the last stint 11:40 am to 3:30 pm as the track slowly dried out from the morning rain, plenty of drifting action and near misses!
