Looking to join the Mk2 clan

So I've always loved the body style of the MK2 supra, and I've finally convinced the wife we need a 2nd "project/fun" car.

My question is this - I'd like to take it on the track on occasion and since it's RWD has anyone made a decent drift car? I know the weight is a big issue...

Thanks!

 you must be talking abou the mk3 :piggy:
There are a couple of people on here that take their cars to the track Im sure they will chime in soon. There are also other people here that say they "drift" the mk2 all the time too

Weight is an issue compared to what ever-so-popular driftmobiles? 240sx? Turbo2?

It has a fairly neutral balance, though you have to watch out for understeer with the same tires all round. If I wanted to honestly drift, I would invest in a set of stickies (kuhmos probably) for the front and just run street tires in the back. You will need to rely on a pendulum motion to unseat the back end. Otherwise, our cars will track straight through every corner with slight hints of oversteer. Again, sticky tires up front should fix all those problems.

Quite stable in my opinion. I ran 4 events on good front tires and dryrotted old rear's. Seemed to do very well in the "drift" category, not so well in the "ftd" category.

its steering ratio is too low to be a good out of the box "drift" car, and its a little front heavy and the stock wheels and tires are horrible for that sort of thing. Can be a great track car with a little work though
billyM: are you talking about the same car?? Both the Mk2's I've owned have been the most tail-happy cars I've ever driven! Never had a problem with understeer that's for sure...
Ah that's great news. I have no dillusions of becoming great at it - it's something I'd just like to try should another drift day at the track come along. I would definately have a set of track tires. Just to be clear - an LSD is pretty much required no?

On a side note - are there any pictures around of a Supra digital dash lit up? I've searched and searched with no sucess.

Damn I can't wait. :D

Oversteer, sure, understeer, with the stock tires definatly. Especially if you've stiffend the suspension up a little. Its just the tires though

Damn this really is the Supra Vortex! Thanks!

One last one - if I ask the seller if the car has an LSD, aside from doing a burnout, is there any visual check? Or just follow the type/year differences posted in the sticky faq?

Check the firewall dataplate. Look at the rear axle code. Should have either a 3 or 5 on the end.
Weight is an issue for any race car. The Mk2 Supra is not exactly a :piggy: but it is not exactly lightweight either.

If your car is going to be a "fun car/project racer" then you can remove a lot of things to reduce weight. My 82 race car has about 450 lbs removed from it, so its weight without rollcage or driver would be about 2500 lbs.

For more info on weight reduction, check out the Modifications section of my website.
Was searching old posts, so thought I'd just post one follow-up:

Was great fun, but the LSD needs replacing if I decide to keep doing it.

Oh, you'll be breaking much more than just the LSD if you keep doing that...
Holy body roll Batman....
Looks like fun. Keep it on the track and be safe!
