Well i am also trying to decide on what to do to my block and head.. do i get them decked in prep for the metal head gasket or not.. i have heard both sides of this story... one saying leave it as is, you will not get better than factory.. and the other saying definately get it done...??? has there been anyone out there that installed a metal head gasket on the factory and had it fail???

If your machine shop knows how to put a nice smooth finish on the head and block might as well do it.

If the head and block are found to be flat and are smooth then people say you can get by without it.

I did mine even though they were both fine. No chances here.

Factory finish is NOT good enough. You want the surfaces prepped to to an RA of 25 or less. A competent machine shop will know what that means and whether they can do it.

This finish, on my 7m head & block, started seeping after ~7k miles. They didn't have a profileometer so I don't know the RA, but it was as smooth as they could achieve with their equipment (faint swirl marks, but no ridges could be felt w/ fingernail).

Also make sure they machine the timing case to be flush with the block deck.
