MKII water pump pulley broke

2667 Views 127 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  JCC
Was just posting about the alternator and look at what we have here. I was on the freeway and heard something break. Kept going hoping it was not something vital and then could not keep it running after a bit. I guess that is what happens when the alternator is no longer being turned by the belt. What is the pulley I need?

Hmmm thought there were 3 water pump bolt lengths.
Memory, not so good. That's why I take 1000's of pictures and make notes.
again, really appreciate the guidance and wish I had realized before I assembled the first time

the two 12mm head bolts are 60mm if that makes you feel better

also, have new thermostat and gasket on the way
yes, definitely having a case of mozwells or sinceyouwas haha

thank you for the advise and I definitely do not know what degree I should go with for sure

photos attached are what happens when you miss taking the old gasket off of your thermostat housing when replacing with a new one

fortunately, AutoZone had one on hand which was exactly the same Fel-Pro gasket that I messed up

belts all tightened up and cooling system has been burped I hope adequately enough though did not feel much feel blowing strangely enough

may have to try again another day

hoping this is the end of this saga and also hope this thread will help others

I appreciate very much all of the advice and help!

Why the sealant?
EDIT: Wait I just re-read that. You double gasketed it?
Take you time. If you get stuck ask. Doing things twice every time gets old fast and more expensive too

yeah, it was silly

I thought I had gotten all of the old gasket off and was working on it in the dark

again, hope others can learn from my mistakes

fortunately only cost me some time, additional coolant and a replacement gasket which I was fortunate to find locally at AutoZone rather than having to wait

I started at Napa, went to O'Reilly and found they both discontinued the part though still in their computer systems. The first AutoZone I went to showed they it on hand, but could not find it on the shelf. The stock numbers on the shelves skipped the number on their new "planagram". They saw a nearby store showed to have two of them so they called to make sure before sending me there.

happy ending

Buy a head lamp so you can see what you're doing. Or are you that guy that try's to use his phone as a flash light?

I used a headlight, but I should have really checked and cleaned before putting the new gasket on

careless mistake, but seems all good now
