Need some 6mgte help

Just got my '84 6mgte up and running but I've run into a confusing snag. The car started and ran just fine after fixing some timing issues. It had good power, smoked abit but was drivable till today. This afternoon I was playing with the AFM setings, by-pass screw all the way out with the AFM gear five teeth clockwise (lean) when, poof, it started running VERY rich.

Now it's so rich at idle that it spews out massive amounts of black smoke while missing on all six. I can't even get it to go over 30mph. I've adjusted the AFM gear to about 20 teeth clockwise, which helps but then the car won't restart if it dies.

I've checked for IC piping leaks and found none. I've even went back to stock AFM settings but still nothing. Is it possible the ECU might be fried, or the AFM??

Anyone have any ideas?

It's running 7mge 295cc injectors, new fuel filter and stock fuel pump

my guess...the afm died and the ecu went to fuel maps...

using its normal fuel maps but with ur larger injectors would create a brutally rich condition...just imo

Since you just happened to be adjusting the AFM when this happened, I'd definitely check the AFM first. TSRM gives a list of tests to do, and it only takes about 5-10 minutes. If it checks out OK, you should check the connector carefully too. Those things get brittle after 20 years under the hood. :wink: Like asaqwert said, if the ECU gets no signal from the AFM, it might run brutally rich with your 295 injectors.

I havent' checked those yet.

The car is in Buckley so it's a half hour drive just to get to it. Maybe this week sometime. :3gears: :banghead: :bonk: :drink:
