For 17" tires, it all depends on what you want out of the tire, how aggressively you drive, what sizes you want and what you can afford.

Bridgestone S0-2
Bridgestone S0-3
Michelin Pilot Sport
Pirelli Rosso
Pirelli Zero
Toyo T1-S
Yokohama AVS Sports
(listed alphabetically)

All are top of the line ultra-performance tires (Y-rated)... and pricing reflects that. Most Y-rated tires will only last between 10K to 30K miles. So take that into consideration when choosing the above.

One ultra-performance tire that is economical and Y-rated is the Ventus Sport K104. This is available in 245/40R17. It has been reviewed to outperform Kumho Ecsta Supras, but yet costs less. They offer a free limited road hazard too. If it's within 25% tread wear, they will replace the tire. No other company offers road hazard warranty with an ultra-performance tire.

If you are on a budget and just want tires. The Ventus Sport K104 is your BEST bargain. Where else are you going to get a Y-rated tire at H-rated pricing.

If you want staggered fitment (rear tires larger than the front) and want to stick to the same brand, few companies offer this for the mk2. One example is the Yokohama AVS Sport.

Don't try to get a tire package you can barely afford now. Because when it comes time for replacement, that tire may or may not be available and you might have to go to a more costly alternative.

In the words of some of my Cali friends. The S-03s are hella better. Right now they are considered the de facto ultimate street tire non-race compound.

Then if you want to go for DOT approved race compounds... there's the Pirelli Corsa.

If you are looking at cost no option street tire thats capable in the rain. Go with the S-03. The Michelins tend to get greasy when heated up (and they're French - if you are anti-French at the moment  )

I have the Yokohama AVS Sports on the Mk2 and Bridgestone S-02 PP on the mk4. Both are suited for each car's performance aspects and could have easily been swapped. At the time, I wanted the ultimate tire for the mk4. When I walked in the showroom, that's exactly how I asked for it: What's the ultimate performance tire and do they make it in my sizes?

There are plenty of other tires that will give you great performance if you want a little more conservative pricing. See my post above. Ultimately, the decision should be based on what you can afford vs. what you want out of the car.

A lot of people are happy with Falkens. Personally, not my first choice in performance. (We've replaced a lot of "High Performance" Falkens with M+S rated Toyo's.) But they are cheaper none-the-less and they suited the buyer's needs.

With 17" tires you will have a lot more selections than you did with 14" And most of the tire models that worked at 14" will not work at 17"

Make sure you understand the wear rating of each model and the performance rating, so you know what you're getting our of your tire and for how long.
