hi, i have a friend that has a turbo fabercation shop. was thinking of having him make a turbo set up. like the "chimps" but about a grand less, and it would have a garret t3/t4 turbo set up. just wondering how many people would be serious about getting it.

Alright....I'll be the first to chime in and say that what you're asking is imposible. Here's why:

  • t3/t4 turbo cost a minimum of $1000 on any given day
A decent sized intercooler will run you at least $600-$1000
Custom 1 off intercooler pipes are a fortune, but I'll lowball it to $450
Custom Downpipe will run you a min. of $200
Misc. Accesories that come with the kit are roughly $800

Now, I fully understand that if you buy in higher number you will receive better pricing but not by much. The automotive performance business is pretty cu-throat and profit margins are fairly low on a majority of the parts. Plus at $2500-$2800 your friend is either not make a penny or he's loosing big time...i'd guess the second option.

Am I trying to say that this kit can't be made for $2500-2800....HELL NO. I know for a fact that it can...I'm simply saying that it can't be sold for that amount by a business. There are a lot of factors to consider...building the kit on your own, you can skip a corner here or there...as a reseller...you can't, quality will have a major impact on your sales.

I could go on for hours...but i'll save you all the pain. Please don't respond and nit-pick my pricing...it is only rough. If you're friend thinks he can do this...the more power to him...I'll be the first to appologize...maybe i'll even buy 10 kits off him to resell

not to shot you out of the water. but i know for a fact that most of your pricing is too high. for a Garrett T3T04E(57 trim), i can buy these for $549.99 all day long, and that is not evon at a discount to me or for about $150 more you could get a t4 60-1. i nice intercooler(8.5x20x3in) for 499.95. you piping price is about right, i could save a little. the dp would probably be a little more(in the $300) but it would be stainless steel and fit for stock. and as far as acc. the kit would probaly come with a bov and oil lines. but im shure you could purches other things too. soo its looking to be about in the $1700 for turbo, fmic, piping, dp, bov, and oil lines. the only thing left is the manifold i would have to ask him about that. i do know that it would be 304 stainless(thick wall) tig welded, and cnc cut flang. not cast. so i think that under $3000 would be very posible.

If you put together a complete kit /w custom manifold, downpipe, new turbo, intercooler and piping, and all necessary fittings, lines, and fuel upgrades for under $3,000 I will be the first person in line to send you a check.

Lets please not turn this into a piss-fight. First off, you need to go about this more professionally. Dont include your personal prices, just tell us exactly what will be included in the sales and the final price. If you produce a turbo kit for $700-1000 less than chimp, you WILL have buys.

Go sit down with this friend of yours, call around, get ALL prices for everything. You need to include EVERYTHING if you are going to call this a complete kit. Mainly, you will need to do this exact kit on a personal vehicle. Take lots of pictures and even make a write-up for directions to be shipped with your kit. This way, you will not overlook ANY of the little things necessary to put the kit together. Instead of just saying, well, you need a turbo, exhaust, manifold, and intercooler...

Listen,

I'm not trying to flame your @$$ here, it's just that for month people have complained about that price and the second they do some investigation their pie hole starts to shut up.

When saying you or someone you know can sell for less please compare apples to apples...not apples to oranges. If you want to save people money, why don't you ask them if they don't mind going down in intercooler size as you have indicated...20x8.5x3 is much smaller than rabid chimps. And as Billy indicated...you must make it as complete as the Rabid Chimp set-up...otherwise you are saving people $1000 by not selling a complete kit. I'm sure if you email Aaron he'd be perfectly willing to only sell people what they need out of the kit.

So you say my pricing is too high...of coarse it is...like I said, if your friend doesn't want to make any profit that's fine with me. Just make sure that when you make a statement that you can produce a kit with a better price you quantify it by telling us exactly what is included. Selling an incomplete kit for $1000 less is not my idea of a good deal.

That's it for now...i'll keep my big mouth shut till you get us some more details.

Karaki: Roar!
BillyM: Simmah' down nowh.

Alan, listen, I appreciate your thoughts on producing a cheap turbo option, but I dont forsee it. Take Karaki's words with a few sheets of fabric softener, but do listen to his overall message. You need to do a bit more research to see exactly how much this will cost. I really suggest making the complete kit and installing it on one of your personal vehicles to know exactly what you are getting into. Aaron Garney of rabidchimp.com did the same thing with tons and tons of prior research.

Now, if you want to only make a partial kit, I suggest selling the following piece(s):

Custom tubular manifold with a few options for flanges and or wastegates. If you are making these in-house, it will be easy to have a few diagrams for the more popular turbo's. We currently have no cost effective option for manifolds, and it limits us to a single turbo, the ct26.

thanks for all the replys, and just for the record. all the prices i listed are what he sell to open market. not a special deal. and his bussnes is growing. he dose not just have a small shop. he dose a lot of custom work for high end cars. not that im trying to brag. just another note, the size of the intercooler i listed was the core size. if that makes a diff. ill defently sit down with him and talk it over. ill take a list of what rapid sells and see what he says. thanks again for all the replys.

dudes for 1k u can turbo ur car. get a used ($75) ct-26 rebuild it($250), get the 7mgte manifold ($50) get the mkiii intercooler ($150-300) then get the piping and do it urself ($100) it wont be as badass as the RC kit, but hey its a turbo and it increases ur power. if u want better stuff upgrade stuff as ur money comes with the RC counterparts like a RC intercooler and wat not, but at least ull have the power in the meanwhile. plus all that comes to $875 leaving u money for a boost controller and/or blow off valve, depending on wat kinda hook ups u got

...dont forget the $1,000 to replace the motor because your dumbass forgot fuel upgrades...

also, there is that thing... bolts onto the turbo... oh yes... exhaust! if you are putting on a turbo, you are doing it because you want power, power wont be made unless you have a nice exhaust, anything bigger than 2" is expensive, if you go with mandrel bent, you are looking at atleast $500 for dp and dp-back.

sit there and bench-purchase/race and you will come up with "oooh can do it for less than a grand" but ask anyone who's purchased the shit and they will say otherwise.
