NOS, someone tell me the basics

How great is NOS?, what needs to be done to put it in?
In other words, i know nothing, and want to know something.

well, to start - and mainly to clear things up, it's not "NOS". NOS stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems, a company that sells Nitrous Injection products. the fast and the furious movie cleverly left out this fact, a subtle, yet deadly effective marketing tactic. there are many other companies that sell nitrous products.

beyond that, laughing gas scares me...

Holley makes a kit specific for our cars. It is a complete kit that uses the cars own computer and O2 sensor to monitor and protect the car. 599.00US, 899.00CAN When armed the system auto triggers at WOT when the fuel injectors go into open loop. Make sure your brakes and suspension can handle it :twisted:

It will greatly reduce the life of your engine. Lots of cheep power but it eventually does come at a price.

Also....... Plan on going w/ a MHG. Many years ago on the Yahoo list, someone up in Canada ran a 75 shot nitrous setup on his 5MGE. 2 BHG's later, he switched to a 50 shot setup & things were much better.

Just don't overdo it, esp if you have the later 5M's w/ the 9.2 compression..

Thats funny, cause everyone I know of has been calling it NOS ever since back in 94. I guess it's cause back then NOS was pretty much the only company which made anything.

yeah lots of people made that mistake before F&F, but its been 10 times worse afterwards. At least there was no NOOOOSSS in the sequel, maybe that will clue a few people in (not likely)

Is that on a 5M or 6M?

Cuz I was thinking about going with a small amount of laughing gas on my 6M

NOS nitrous systems actually go way back to the 70's and were one of the best systems on the market. Back then, nitrous oxide was considered cheap bolt-on horsepower and was sometimes also referred to as cheater horsepower. It will definitely add more punch to the seat of the pants meter, but go easy with it if you're not familiar with the basics of how these systems work. Where the term "Noss" or "Nozz" came about is beyond me. :roll: There are several good performance handbooks that describe the basic theory and operation of nitrous oxide systems.

I have done some research on using Nitrous on my 5m, and the best website I have found is www.nitrous.info

Tons of great informating including building your own kit CHEAP! This guy truly understands what nitrous does and how to make it work safely in your car or motorcycle. Read it!

Sport Compact Car did a big article on the stuff and all the latest kits that are available a couple issues ago. It was pretty informative.

Wow I just spent three hours reading around his site. He's a very smart man. Too bad about that motorcycle accident

I think I could even build my own system with that site for help.

I agree Wil. After reading and re-reading and re-re-reading his site, I am convinced anyone could add a safe 70hp (1mm jets) shot to their tight-running 5m. The profit margin for those aftermarket nitrous kits has to be enormous!

not sure how much of that site you read, but ill sum up what i can from memory quickly.

nitrous is an oxidizer... it brings a shit load of basically free oxygen molecules into the air fuel charge, more air, as long as you provide more fuel = more power.

usually there are wet and dry systems, wet injects nitrous along with the fuel, usually these are used for large power gains, as the mist can be more finely controlled, and i belive it has some intercooling effect on the air fuel mixture, as this shit is cold under pressure.
dry systems use a separate injector path for the nitrous, often a plate thats sandwiched between two parts of the intake, and it sprays through little nozzles and tries to intercept the incoming fuel.

done properly, nitrous is cheap speed on demand, to a point.
bottles run empty, and set up can be done improperly, either one will leave you loosing a race.
and just like anything that increases horsepower, the more you demand from it, the more likely you are to run into problems.

hmmm, i cant think of much more to say about nitrous right now... probably so much ive left out.

Wow, thanks for all the replys.

I have got a 1G-EU, and I am just trying to think of thigns I can do to make it more powerful. I thnk the best way is to get a 1G-GTEU engine, I am told it just drops right in.
And I am not sure if NO2 is legal in NZ.

As far as I know N02 isnt legal anywhere...but the track

its legal here. The only restiction with it I belive is you have to inform BC ferries of it if your travelling on one of their ferries as of the pressurized tank

Huh...go figure. You have to pass smog check but can have N02. We dont have smog checks and also no N02. Werid. Canadian law makes so much sense :?
