Oil pump probs

4652 Views 31 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Junkie
I'm in a bind. I bought a new 7m pump to throw into my 7mgte. Of course one prob is redoing the pickup. However, ,due to the pumps different orientation, it does not clear the arp main studs. And even if it did, it looks like the crank counterweight will hit it, if not it would only have a fraction of an inch clearance. The 5m pump fits like a glove. I like the 7m pump cause its new. Would it be possible to transfer the guts from it into the 5m pump? Also how thick of a washer would I use to up the oil pressure, ,and what would that new pressure be?

TIA

Well, I got my new oil pump in the mail yesterday. It's an application for 82-88 5mge. It looks exactly like the one I used to compare to the 7mgte unit (and found they were basically identical). I checked the clearance with my 85 pan and it had ~5mm clearance. Looks good and I'm going to use it. pre 85, post 85, i don't know, but it works.

Where did you get this pump and how much was it? Did it come with the pick-up too? PN?

Thanks,
well, i originally ordered a rebuilt 7m pump ($119) my cost from Topline. They didnt have one so they sent me a new one for same price. That wouldn't work so i replaced it for 5m. So 119 for brand new pump w/pickup. Prices went up since then I think. p/n OPTO19L

hey, just an fyi. anyone thats gonna put a 5mge pump in a 7m needs to swap the 5m oil pump drive shaft in as well. that was the source of that knocking noise i had. dave can testify to that. we spent over an hr listening to the noise and checking things and it disappeared and came back several times. it was weird. this was about 6hrs before my car got totalled so i have plenty of time to swap the drive gear now. hth.

UHHHHHHHH....I hope you had a worn shaft or something. Cause I just put in a brand new 7m shaft and just got done torquing the head down on the (mega expensive) hks stopper gasket last night. I will have to try it cause I refuse to go through all that work/money again.

Christian
well, im sure the shaft was worn, the motor wasnt new. hopefully you dont have any problems. i myself would like to know if the gear on the top of the pump could be swapped between the 5m and 7m pumps. anyway, when i get the settlement for my 84 ill prolly buy a 1.2mm mhg and the main bearings and just swap the shaft. id like to put a new mhg and get rid of the one ive reused half a dozen times.it will prolly be awhile before the 7mgte makes it into another mkii. just figured id give you the heads up. on my race motor im gonna be sure i use the 5m drive shaft though.

Christian,no worries as long as it's a good shaft,10 gte's with 5m pumps,gear/shaft not a problem.

William-check those spots I told you about, before you buy any parts.

All!!!, when installing a 5m pump, rotate crank, check for clearance.I have had the crank lightly rub 1- the main oil tube,at the "banjo",2- on the main body of the pump,in the area of the hold down bolt "don't know how else to describe".A bit of dremel work/grinder work has solved this issue. Not every pump/block combo does this-strange but true.

So just to verify, a 7M shaft with a 5M pump will work? I'm putting my 7M back together so this is pretty important.

Thanks,

Oil Pumps & Pans

Just thought I'd throw in my .02c worth.....Regarding 82-86 (5M motors) the oil pan was shallower in the sump from 82 until approx. July 84. The oil pump pickup was shorter to fit.
The oil pans and pumps from after July 84 until end of MKII's were approx. .5 inches deeper. Doesn't sound like much but if you try to fit an early pan (shallow) on an engine with the later pump (longer) it WON'T FIT! And I speak from experience! Of course a deep pan and short pump will work, but why do it that way?
My local Toyota Parts guy (Broadway Toyota, Portland) gave me all the info on production dates and part numbers for all pan / pumps.

Shawn, thank you very much.

Later,
Greg is correct,I forgot to mention the pan thing. That is mostly due to the fact, that the 85-6 pan is the only pan I use "85-8 Cressida is the same" unless the car is staying 5m,and not being modded.
The ONLY problems I ahve run across with the pump fitment, have been clearance issues with the crank at the "banjo" on the tube,and/or the base of the pump.Knowing this,I just assemble, rotate crank, find interference point,dis-assemble,grind,repeat :)
The funny/weird part about this little dilemma, and This isn't hard figures, but, spilt it into almost 1/3's -no grinding involved-grind the banjo/tube-grind the base of the pump.
