You are right about the difference in finish.
I had that problem when I repainted mine in the 90's.
And yes, the best solution was to use polish on them.
Not sure if I ended using compound, wheel polish or paint polish, but for sure I worked them out to be closer to the 'real' originals.

Yes, I found the NOS side molding that I had purchased about 2012 to be somewhat less shiny than the original. I actually liked the slightly matte finish, but since the ones on the front fenders that I had restored were shinier, I wanted the new NOS moldings to match. First I gave them a little polish with the swirl remover, and then a wipe down with STP Son of a Gun or equivalent to finish up.
