Posessed Temp Gauge

Okay, my temp gauge is posessed. Well, probably not, but it is broken. It reads accurately while cold, then once it warms up to op. temp, it keeps climbing, making me think I am overheating. Sometimes if I tap on the gauge cluster it jumps to normal and stays, other times it does nothing, other times it jumps back and forth. If I do nothing, it will tick back and forth rapidly and then settle back down to where it ought to be. When I park, after driving for a while, and get back in the car, it reads all the way at H for a few minutes, then jumps back down to normal. Do you think this is the gauge, sensor, sending unit, wiring, or something else? What would the procedure be for testing the various parts?

Ken,

Sending Unit. Sounds like the typical symptoms.

Replace...
The temp gauge on my Cressida did the same thing. It would climb up, then if I smacked the cluster, it would jump around for a bit. I thought it was the sending unit, the t-stat, etc. I got a junkyard cluster and replaced the gauge, and no more problems. I would say the gauge is the culprit.

Ditto but an 82 mk2
Totally the sending unit - I had the exact same symptoms until I replaced mine.
Cool. Thanks!
okay.... this same thing happened to me before my engine blew last year... well when it was time for the rebuild i meant ahead and change the sending unit... but to my knowledge it would be the sending unit... after a few days the damn gauge flactuates again doing the smae old thing and I have a spare gauge cluster with all the gauges and went ahead and changed the temp gauge... and it all worked fine....just my 0.02
so where is the temp sending unit located on the 82's? ever since my engine swap, its read wrong all the time using the same cluster. before engine swap, guage was always correct.
HOLY old thread!! I remember the white car doing that... ahh, memories... :p

Anyway, temp sensor is on the thermostat housing. I never did bother to fix it, by the way, but now my red car is acting up so maybe I'll have to do something about it.

shoot me if im wrong.. is it under the distribitor (sp) on a 5/6 M engine?
pics of there areas? i have two plugs that go on top of the t-stat housing. one has a green colored plug, and one is yellow/brown?
its located underneith the distributor and the manifold. good luck getting to it! i had to be a controsionist (SP???) just to get the stupid wire hooked back up. mine doesn't work either. i've been living without it for a while. i just listen to my electric fan, then i know its hot!
Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong. I was under this impression. On the t-stat housing (has the green plug and brownish plug you were describing) are ther cold start timer and water temp sensor. The thing under the distrib was something else.
The thing under the distrib was something else.
Temperature guage sending unit...

<---- Been replaced 2x in the MKII, it STILL NEEDS to be replaced in the MKI.
So the sensor and the sending unit are two different parts then?
Correct
Gauge cluster temp sensor under distributor/manifold (single wire- Yellow/green)
Cold start temp sensor thermostat housing (two wire)
EFI temp sensor thermostat housing (two wire)
For a total of 3 temp sensors
