I live in Florida, was in SF Cali and saw a silver one owner 85 P type. I really like this body style and was wondering what they are REALLY worth. The body has 220k but has a 40k 6M in it, and HKS intake, Lowered . The interior is cloth and has average wear. No sunroof, original paint.. and best of all... NO rust. Whats it worth?

Is there any way you could post some pics. I heard these cars usually don't go by blue book when sold individually. Like MR2's and MK 4's tend to be way overpriced all from the demand.

But I've seen nice conditioned low milage 7mgte's go for $4-5K and saw a few sold.

I think your being asked higher than normal because of the low milage 6M. I prefer a better bargain just like you. And I like to stay $2K and below w/a good body, little rust. And bad/decent 5mge so I can get a spankin deal. But, yeah, $4k? thats too high I think.

Some reason I notice MK 2's w/nice & clean 6mgte's and up can go for $4k and up :? Its pretty much worth it to me/mainly others will buy if theres a nice 7mgte in it :D

Gootch, you know much about inline 6's? I didn't but quickly learned when I bought my '85. I got it with a blown head gasket, and had to rebuild it from there. Well, I'm around the $1,500 range for what I've put into it so far, still needs a clutch and some minor stuff, but that might be a way to go also, depending on time, knowhow, etc...

Just my $0.02

A word of warning on that 6m mileage. 6m motors are hacked from the original Crown sedans in Japan and sold over here quite literally "by the pound" in large containers chock full of used Japanese engines. The importers advertise 35K to 40K miles only because thats the average mileage of ALL salvage vehicles chopped up in Japan. They have absolutely no way to know the mileage on any particular engine. 6ms have been out of production for over 15 years so you have to realize that these engines have either been sitting around with seals deteriorating and cylinders rusting for a long, long time OR they have quite a lot more than the average 40K miles on them. In our group's collective experience, buying these used motors is kind of a crap shoot anyway, certainly worth no more than a well maintained original 5m with verifiable mileage. As to value, you should disregard anything the owner says about the motor or mileage and base your judgement entirely on condition. Is the paint still glossy? Is the material intact? How's it run and drive? Ultimately, are you going to be happy with your purchase? Value can be grossly different by region and its impossible for us to judge specifically without seeing the car ourselves, but I agree with the previous posts that ballpark an AVERAGE condition mk2, (meaning faded but intact paint, a few door dings, worn but intact drivers seat, squeaks and rattles, 1/8" tread left, no rust in the quarters mabe a small speck on the hatch), in the $2000 to $3000 range. HTH.

OK, phil... I agree about the 6M, he did say the mileage would be impossible to verify. The motor has been in the car for a year and about 10k miles. I drove the car.. its solid and very clean. Its looks similiar to your silver one..... whats yours worth? He said he would take $3200. But I ve got to get it from left to right coast... so add a grand to that. Still need help guys, I will make up my mind tonight.
Thx

Unfortunately its not worth a third of what I've spent on it in recent years. Just realize that will be true of any mk2 you buy, if not right away, then the moment you make the first repair or add on the first mod. Thats why we call it our "disposable income."

Personally, tho, if you are ready and willing to spend $4000, I'd have a little patience and find one with less miles and better condition closer to home. That much should buy a really nice one.

Although you can rightfully add some value for the custom wheels. Generally not any cheap wheels that fit. Didn't see the pic till after the last post.

Thanx Phil, I appreciate your honesty. Unfortunately this is somewhat of a Christmas present to my son, so as much as I would like to wait.. the ones close by without rust and low miles are being sold for 5-7k. Without much luck I assume. But again a big hearty thanx. Any other thoughts ? do I or dont I..... you guys decide :D

if you can afford it, and you want to buy one, then buy it :)

if your scraping together the pennies and not sure about buying it, dont buy it.

if you can afford it and arent sure... then ask yourself if your son would like it, and decide accordingly.

I'm up for adoption and love Silver MK2's
Shit, I'd probably by YOU the car so I could live in FLA.
Not even Xmas and I'm sick of the snow
Seriously though, like dogstar said, if moneys in pocket and you like, get it.
Just remember, the day you get it home the "deal of the century" will likely appear right on your doorstep.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hey Gootch,

Before I say anything, this is just my opinion, and you know what they say about that......lol.

This is an 85, so it is not a new car that you will be driving off the lot with any warrenties. I think that the man is asking way to much for the car. As with any used car, there is going to be work that has to be done. Remeber, this is a private seller and as much as we want to believe everything people tell us, some people are not very honest. I found that out when I bought my 83 supra recently and was stranded on Alligator Alley coming home with it, cause the man did not tell me that he was having problems with it staying running after awhile of running, thank goodness it was just the catalyc converter clogging up, but still. They are not obligated to tell you eveything that is wrong with the car. My suggestion, if you have not done it yet, take it to a shop and have it checked out before buying it, after all it is for your son.
