ok so hear i am all ready to start the build for 400+ rwhp (7mgte) but im running into one problem. The w58 wont hold. as it is im going to need a new clutch to hold the new turbo thats going in in the next mounth. So hears the problem if i get a new clutch with in a year i should kill my W58 so i got to thinkin. with me this is a bad thing thinking that is. y by a new clutch if it means im in for a rebild on my trans lets spend my money in a better way. Lets drop in a R154! Ive only heard that is a pain in the ass to do but i want to say so far its been a breez. today i went out to look at pricing on a r154 but no i cant do that so i came home with one. the price was to good $200. i got it home and went to work. i pulled the trand out of my parts car and just shuved in the r154 and it almost fits with no hammering at all. i will do a full right up with pics when i done. as for now the only thing that will be a pain is the drive shaft but i will have a better idea about what i will need to do with that tomorrow. I know its long but im exited if all goes well i might be just a tune (greddy e-manage or s-afc 2) away from my hp goal.

this is funny, everything is just as i said it would be but so many people argued with me and said it would never work. btw, what had to be done to the driveshaft for it to work? from what i can tell the front of the r154 shaft has to be cut off and mated to the rear half of the mkii shaft and overall length 2in shorter then the stock w58 section. all of this dealing with the front half of both driveshafts.

From what I've seen the driveshaft in Mk3's is much wider than a Mk2, so grafting them together isn't really possible. You'd have to take your front section and R154 yoke to a driveshaft specialist and get them to weld in a new tube of appropriate length.
