I don't often talk about future plans for my car, but I was forced to reveal my hand on this one :)

Alright, its spring and its time to go racing! Got my car ready for the first autox of the season this last weekend. I've gotten severally sick of changing my tires at the venue. My race wheels have clearance problems due to my huge 40mm RCAs so I've had to run a complicated spacer setup to use them. Couple that with my suspension settings I have to change at the track (driving on the street with approx -5 deg of camber isn't great for tire wear) makes for needing alot of time before and after, so last year I ran on my new street tires. BFG GForce KDs on the front and some Kumho ASTs on the back. I was hoping the much wider AST would be able to keep up to the more aggressive KDs but they didn't, and the BFGs were a big step down from my old Toyo RA1 r compounds. My pace was off as much as 4 seconds a lap at some events last year, I felt like a newb, it sucked! So this year I decided to go back to my ancient RA1s (I bought them fairly well used like 7 years ago?). I figure I havn't been able to kill them on the track in that many seasons of autox (they're the road race compound) then I might as well just drive them on the street for the half an hour drive to the track. So I got them all rebalanced and switched to stick on weights. The clip on ones were interfering with my ball joints even with 2 8mm spacers per side so I was running a bolt on 25mm spacer last time I used them. However I have longer studs then stock so I had to use them with one of the 8mm spacers as well, not exactly an ideal arrangement. Now with the stick on weights 2 8mm spacers per side on the front did the trick and I was able to use the bolt on 25mm spacer on the rear to bring them out to match. Of course I have the longer studs on the rear too, so I decided to fix this problem for good...



Clearanced the wheels them selves for the bit of the original studs that stick through the spacers, problem solved and my wheels are lighter now! Here's the new stance with the race wheels (which are in desparate need of a refinish, but thats uber low on the priorty list)...



Visible in that pic is my one winter mod, Aerocatch hood latchs. And the install isn't totaly done yet, still finishing off the brackets though they are properly installed right now with the initial set I made. I'll post more on them later when they're all done. But they rock, and my hood is rock solid at speed now.

So something amazing happened this last fall\winter, something I figured was never going to happen. They doubled our autox pad at the new venue in Pitt Meadows! We've been autoxing on a 250 foot by 1000foot pad since we moved there a few years ago (by moved I mean all the car clubs including the RCMP were kicked out of the last venue). The plan was always to pave it in 2 sections, finishing with a 500x1000 pad but then the economy tanked it seemed like a distant dream. Well it happened, and it freakin rocks!!



The perspective in that pic doesn't show how big it is now, that dark section in the background is exactly the same size as the lighter section. Not only does this mean we can run longer courses, with higher speeds and more varied layouts, but it also means we get way more runs in now because we don't have any overlapping sections so we can run 3 to 4 cars at once on track. I did 15 runs with fun runs last sunday! Thats amazing, I've never had over 10 or 11 at any event before, and this was with 74 drivers! The venue's rental cost has doubled so the cost to autox has gone up to 50 bucks from 30, but its totaly worth it. Here's a shot someone got of me running...



My RA1s are still sticking, they just won't die, my speed is back! FTD was a 43.4. My best offical run from the initial 8 was 49.45, a little off my usual pace on these tires. I got that time in the morning and couldn't seem to improve on it in the afternoon. But then we got 7 fun runs, all back to back and I was able to figure out where I was loosing time and got down to a 48.1! Not too bad, and I beat some pretty fast machinery including a new GTR (with my offical times). The grip on the new pad is pretty awesome, and all of those back to back runs put more heat into my tires then I've ever experienced before, crazy stick! Its going to be an awesome season. What a wicked day.

Normal? Not really, but I wasn't concerned with normal. The CFX hoods have metal hood latches that work like stock. Most people that run composite hoods with hood pins don't have latches. My problem was that the corners of the hood behind the headlights were lifting at speeds more then I liked. Also the hood had a slight bow to it and I wanted to suck it down a touch to get a perfect fitment, which I managed. I would have mounted them a bit more forward then I did but I was able to mount the pins and brackets in that location using all factory mounting holes. Which I'll cover in another post soon.

indeed! i remember long ago the fitment issues. I'd love to see the underside of that hood.

Well there isn't much for fitment issues but I did have some contact at one point due to my mk3 rad install, but I seem to have taken care of that with my body panel alignment I did before installing the aerocatch pins. I will post more on the latch install in the nearish future, still finishing up the brackets.

I've been considering those hood latches for awhile. A little afraid to cut holes in my hodd though.

Yeah its a scary moment indeed. At least yours is FG and painted. You screw it up you can fix it and hide it nicely, no such luck for me. You know the old addage, measure twice cut once? I followed measure 5 or 6 times, cut once lol.

The Aerocatches are awesome though, exactly what I wanted (I hate normal hood pins). Once you become aware of them you'll realize they're being used everywhere now! Any exotics or fancy builds with carbon hoods\bonnets you see in magazines etc, they all have them now. They even work with the pins coming in from the side, handy for one piece front ends and hatches and such. Too bad they cheaped out on the finish for the hardware. All of the mounting screws will be going in my next batch parts I get black nickel plated.

This thread is long overdue for an update, plenty to post, but no time right now and the 82 L Type resto thread gets priorty (even more to update there). Untill then, here's one of the best autox shots I've seen of my car taken before. From the autox at Run of the Ogopogo in Vernon BC this last summer...



I didn't want to haul my R Comp tires on a trip that far so I was running on my slippery street tires. My rears don't keep up with the fronts so I was unintionally drifting most of the course. Makes for a good pic though!

Could be just the focal length, but curbs and buildings look dangerously close. The autox's that I've participated in were always in very large open parking lots or an airfield tarmac with nothing within a 100 yards except cones and corner workers. Incentive to stay on course I guess. ;) Nice pic.

Two things! One, I would like to see the AFR values associated with your last dyno... If you were down in the 11.0:1 range you likely still have another 10 HP+ lurking in there!

Lastly, I would like to hear about this 22re cruise control setup that you have going there. I am looking to come up with a cruise setup for the 2JZ with the stand-alone...

Yep, it was a little tight. That was in the interior of BC, Okanagon area, Vernon specifically. The local Corvette club hosted that event and thats the venu they had, a parking lot behind a rec center. It was actually not too bad. They've run there for years and know how to setup the course so your chance of slidding into a curb is pretty minimal. Defintily tighter and more to hit then I'm used to though!

Oh I'm fully tuned, my peak hp hits around 12.5-13.5:1. If you dig around something like page 5 there should be my last tuning log posted with the current A\F numbers. However, its all done with the Split Second kit and stock ecu so the resolution sucks and my numbers bounce around quite a bit. A Megasquirt is most certainly in my future. My kinda lowish hp numbers are due to my stock compression and stock cams, both of which will be dealt with as soon as I can get to it. I'm still quite confident that I will hit 200rwhp with this motor.
