Is it an Auto or 5 speed car? The very first thing I would check would be the blubs themselves. If not that and it's an auto, then the lights work when the shifter is put into a certain spot. The alignment of the light switch and the light switch itself may not be set right. You can have someone check while you move the shifter around in reverse, and all the area above and below to see if it may just be out of alignment. If it's a 5-speed, then there is a plug that runs to the tranny that runs the same. Check to see if it's unplugged ir has come a little loose. Corrosion is not our friend either!..lol That's a few quick checks that I can think of...

Ah, there you go.... Re-install tranny, so that the plug has something to plug into. Backup lights should work again.
