So here's what I got. I was joking with the idea with my step dad about a v8 swap. my car currently has a 6mge, in need of rebuild(valve tick at the least) and well he went out and got me a small block 305 and manual trans... 1) I can't easily find any concrete info bout a 305 like hp/torque numbers, like wikipedia says 160-250...how do I know what it is?! So idk if its gonna be a good gain. 2) from the looks of it I think ima have to do some cutting to fit the trans....soooo any advice on this would be extremely helpful....I've got a good base, my step father has a auto shop(but he wants me to do the work so I kno how, which is what I want to do anyways) and my cousin has a machine shop that he said he would help me with fabrication. So what problems am I looking to encounter and any/all advice will be appreciated. I'm sure the topic has been covered but please save me the hassel as I suck at using search and actually finding wat I'm looking for. So in short small block chevy+mkii=easy/medium/moderately difficult/super hard/ or retarded? And don't worry I'm keeping the 6m rebuilding it and puttin it on some boost and in my other mkii:p

well there are much better swaps out there, but im a big fan of working with what you got....

your not going to find solid numbers on your 305 simply because they offered it thru so many years... That alone is one of the modivating forces to the swap in my mind. You have lots of aftermarket for dirt cheap because it is universal. your best bet for stock numbers is use the blocks ID tag (usually stamped behind the head, on the bellhousing lip of the block) and find out what it came out of and then HP from there...

This swap has alot working in the opposition... mostly the fact that it is a cast iron block and will weight down the front end like none other, so even if you do get it in there you are probably going to have to stiffen up the front end in order to get it some what daily drivable...

on the bright side wireing is going to be a breeze!!
most difficult thing on that side would be getting the tach on the supra to work with the v8... might get luckey and be able to use a celica 4 cylinder cluster...

I would say other than trans tunnel, assuming you have a front sump 350 that wont contact the cradle or sway bar, your main stumbling blocks will be trans mount, engine mounts, and exhaust manifolds... So get in good with your cousin and make sure you got a good welder, and have at it...

Id say this will be a moderately difficult swap that will require lots of fabrication *especially if you have to mod the front crossmember!*

when its all said and done however,
and mind you I hate to say this,
but when its all said and done i think youll find that your going to be left with something that ran you more time (and possibly more money) with a less effective result than if you went with a more established swap [7mgte, 5mgte, 1uz...]
especially if your keeping the 305 in stock shape with no power adders....

I'm definitely not keeping it stock if I do this, the reason I decided this swap is cause it is super cheap to build, I've found cams and header etc, for super cheap. And this is goin in my drift car so I'm already puttin super stiff ass suspension in my car...but thanks a lot, cause I'm still in the stage of figuring out if this is wat I wanna do. Cause my next option is still just rebuilding and boosting the 6m I haveee. But I wanna do the v8 cause its a pretty unique swap in a already unique ass car...and I fuckin love that idea haha. Time is not the biggest problem cause I'm doin this on vacation when I go to visit my mom and step dad...and they live in west virginia...bfe WV at that so this is wat ima be doin all day haha so in a theoretical situation where this is the best possible type of 305, I build the motor, and I get it all in and running great, would this be a great swap for a drift car? See cause I got the motor and trans so from that stance I don't think I'm lookin to spend ass much as if I didn't have those

drift, probably not...
Im just now getting into it my self so i cannot comment too much on it, but it was my understanding that a good drift car would be one that has more upper end torque *ex; turbo motor* and it will be far more controleable with even weight distribution.. Nose heavy will make the back end rather snappy and uncontrolable, thus why you rarly see firebirds or cameros as drift cars....
yes its easy to get the back ends to setp out with that much lower end torque, but controling them once they are is another thing....

but as i said before, im just scratching the surface of all that, others would better answer the question...

I've been driftin for a while with my 6m now. So I got a good amount of knowledge on it, I'm just thinkin unique. Cause honestly...I was considering boosting it after a while hahaha. A boosted v8?! Waaaat?! Haha how much more do u think they way compared to our engines. And I figured a 305 cause compared to most v8s its pretty small haha

i thought a 305 was the same physical size as a 350,383,400..... etc. and 5 liters isnt small v8 either. if you want an interesting swap you should look into lq's engines. i think lq9 is the aluminum and the lq4 is the iron.
but i agree with the ghoul, i'd find a different v8, and go from there.i'd get a 327, if you can, or a 350. it will not be anymore expensive than building a 305. but there is still the weight issue.

sickandtwisted beat me to the punch.

if you want some light in a different direction of an aluminum v8 that's getting boosted, look at my build thread or just come to my place sometime.it's nowhere near finished, but so far everyone seems to like it

with upgrades, a v8 will probably be able to safely rev higher, but I dont see why a v8 would make a bad drift motor weight aside, If its throwing out gobs of torque where our engines lug I see no prob.

lq4 and lq9 are both iron blocks, they are just different version of the 6L, lq9 has more compression i believe. some versions of the lq4 have iron heads, some have alu heads.
from trucks/suvs you want;
LM4, L33, LH6 or LC9. these are 5.3L vortecs, making anywhere from 285hp/325tq to 310hp/335tq

or L76 (2007+, variable cam timing, etc) aluminum 6L 367hp/375tq

or get the LS series engines from the cars, ls1, ls2 are getting quite common at reasonable prices.

the aluminum block gen3/4 engines are about 90lbs lighter, truck intakes perform quite well. tons of potential just with simple long tube headers, exhaust, intake, tuner. the lq4 (stock 300hp/350tq) with long tubers, exhaust, intake, e-fans, tuner, with a 4 spd auto pushed my 6600lb 3/4 ton 4x4 to a 15.7 1/4 mile at 90mph...... definetly will push a 3000lb mk2 pretty well.

common upgrades when using a manual transmission is to put in chromoly push rods in case of a missed shift (stock ones can bend at high high rpm), you can swap in other factory cams for a bit more power or a few hundred bucks for a nice aftermarket cam that can make significant power gains.
boost friendly as well :)
As you can tell, i really like the new chev engine platform.

gto ls2 oil pans can be used to swap into a mk2 as well

Soooo my real dad, and drifting tonight made me reconsider this whole thing....I think ima just go off this 6m platform and rebuild the motor and boost it....I was killin it with just my 6m with just bolt ons...annnndd boostin the motor would make all the power that I think I would need imo. I don't got the need for speed, I gots the need to get sideways so I guess just boost this 6m and be happy?

id think thats best...
as sweet as a swap would be in it i just think the time and money your going to end up putting into it could be better used somewhere else on the project...

Ya especially if I plan to keep driftin in the near future. I don't want my car to be down for a long time while I'm tryin to fabricate. I think 6m as built as I can build it boosted would be a nice gain. Plus I def need a suspension upgrade as of now and if I did the swap I would be able to even drive it till I had everything right. So maybe I'll save this project for my other one...but idk I think ima stick with toyota here on out lol
