Could it be a sulfur smell. A lot of gasoline here and across the world is suffering from a lack of quality, they are making it cheaper selling it for more, and when your engine burns the fuel it causes a really nasty gassy almost rotten egg like smell to emit from the exhaust no matter what you do... the only thing i can say is to try and use a differnt fuel from someother gas station or live with it, if thats it? Hope that helps.

Ahh yes, that nasty rotten egg smell of Sulfur! YUCK! Diesel fuel is bad enough in that department. I'm still wondering what's causing your gas mileage to suffer. The higher Sulfur content shouldn't affect your gas mileage much, if any. The fuel pressure should be 33-38 psi at idle with the vacuum hose disconnected on the FPR and 27-31 psi with the vacuum hose connected at idle. Hmmmm, I'm still leaning towards a fuel pressure problem, either from a ruptured diaphragm in the FPR or perhaps a leaky CSI that's richening up the mixture throughout the RPM range.

I thought the Sulfur (Rotten Eggs) smell was from when you have a bad catalytic converter? I've changed my fuel a couple of times but that damn smell is still there no matter what... :(

I'm thinking it's fuel related also. Or a combination of small things. It's obviously running rich because of the bad mileage and black tail pipe. I'm guessing the smell is from running rich also.

The Sulfur smell will be worse in your case since you don't have a converter. The rich fuel mixture will just make the smell worse as well. Hope you can find the cause soon! Those fumes are very unhealthy!

Just unplugged that hose Dave, off the FPR. No fuel came out and it 'appears' to be ok...there is no fuel around it so at this point I think it's not leaking. There is however, a clicking sound coming from that area...well, around where the injectors are anyway...hard to pin-point exactly but it's from that area...any idea's on that one?

If the FPR is busted, do you think it would make a loud clicking sound? Maybe it's nothing...

last time someone with a SOHC 2-valve Toyota (22R) complained of terrible smell from exhaust I told him to do 2 things

Get better gas

Turn up the timing

In *his* case, I knew from tweeking the engine that he was waaaay low for the cam he was running, but in your case, perhaps you are having troubles from a poorly-functioning ignition?

I'm watching this thread to see what you come up with!

Recently, I failed my emissions test. My exhaust was fumy (real rich acrid odor). I had cranked up my timing to get the power back, compounding the problem. To make a long story short, it was a bad AFM. Only $635.00 at the dealer, luckily, I had one on a parts car, that tested out within the manual's specifications, and I was able to drop the timing back where it belonged. It runs fine, and the smell is gone. The pipe has lightened up to a gray black, and I hope it will pass my emissions re-test.

I just put a new o2 sensor in my car and the exhaust smells much better. No more horrible gas smell. Can't tell if my mieage has changed yet but I suggest u get a new o2 sensor too if u haven't already. I got a Bosch part# 12051 and it looks to be good quality. Cost me $40 off E-bay shipped, I had a hard time finding it anywhere else on the internet.

I dont have a cat either  I put a second free flowing muffler in its place. But how do you get away without having an o2 sensor? I thought it was required for all cars to run efficiently.

Hmmm, the 02 sensor is considered an emission control device so it would seem a little strange that he would have an EGR valve but no 02 sensor. The Haynes manual indicates an 02 sensor on the MKI on pages 1-42 and 6-14. According to the Haynes manual, the ECU on the MKI doesn't have a self-diagnostic feature and the 02 sensor is supposed to be replaced at the "recommended intervals". Hmmmmmm!

Yeah, I thought it was a bit weird too. But other Aussies have said it doesn't have an 02 sensor...so I believe them. The Haynes manual also makes mention that all the cars covered by the manual have a catalytic converter. So really, the manual doesn't exactly cover the Aussie versions when it comes to emission control since our cars were modified to comply with aussie emission regulations...the Haynes is really for the US models I guess...

You know how the 02 sensor is under the exhaust manifold, well on my car there is a wire coming out of there (I guess where the 02 sensor would be)...what would that be for if there is no 02 sensor?

OK guys, I caved. :(

This morning I took the car to Toyota to get it checked out/fixed.

If you've been following this thread, stay tuned! I'll keep you informed of how it turns out and what the problem was...

With any luck it will be something simple like clogged injectors...I pick the car up this afternoon...so we'll see... :)

Ok, now they tell me to take it to a Dyno place (they don't have one) because there could be things which were changed etc.

What exactly does a Dyno measure? Do you think it would be able to tell which part of the car is causing it to run rich or...?

I really hate running around, taking the car to places, and they don't even know what the cause is or how to fix it...D'oh. :(

In the States they run an emissions test on a Dyno because there is a 15MPH and 25MPH test for emissions. That type of test is more of a real world test of how everything is working together in your motor.

As Dave A. said. Australia was fitted with the 5M-E motor which is running at 16Degrees TDC, thus running Leaded petrol.

At the time of the car being imported into Australia we where selling Leaded petrol till 1986.

Anyway the car is not fitted with a O2 sensor and the Cat because they don't mix with Leaded fuels.

Cheers.
